Get Dark Portal

Dark Portal is a collectible toy that serves as an alternative to the Hearthstone. When activated, a miniature copy of the Dark Portal — the very arch from the Blasted Lands and Hellfire Peninsula — unfolds in front of your character, after which you are teleported to your set inn. In effect it is a full equivalent of the Hearthstone: it differs only in visuals and sound.

The item was added to the game in patch 5.2.0 as a reward for a loot card from the Dark Portal Hearthstone set of the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, from the Timewalkers: Betrayal of the Guardian expansion. In patch 7.0.3 the Dark Portal was moved into the Toy Box — once obtained, it stays in your account-wide collection forever and takes up no inventory space.

The item's flavor text reads: "BEHOLD, THE DARK PORTAL. Well, a smaller version of it."

• Iconic visual effect. A miniature copy of the Dark Portal with its green energy stream is a nod to one of Azeroth's most recognizable landmarks. It looks especially striking in capital cities and screenshots.

• A full replacement for the Hearthstone. The toy works like a regular Hearthstone: it returns you to your set inn, has a 30-minute cooldown, and the home location can be changed at any innkeeper. Once you have the portal, you can remove the Hearthstone from your action bar — the toy takes its place.

• Boosts your collection. The toy counts toward the collector meta-achievements: Big Toy Box, Toying Around, and related achievements for the number of items collected.

• Available from level 1. The toy requires no minimum level — it can be used as soon as it is added to your collection, which makes it convenient for alts and twinks.

In the modern retail version of WoW, the Dark Portal is obtained in exactly one way — through a Trading Card Game loot card. The item has no direct in-game source.

Dark Portal Hearthstone Loot Card

The Dark Portal is a code granted by the loot variant of the Dark Portal Hearthstone card from the Timewalkers: Betrayal of the Guardian set of the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. The set was released on February 22, 2013 and was the last major TCG release before the game was discontinued. The card belongs to the Loot category and drops on average in one booster out of 121 — you can find it on the secondary market, but the price bites.

1. Find a sealed Dark Portal Hearthstone loot card from a trusted seller. The average price in 2026 is 80–150 dollars per code, depending on the card's condition and the seller. A full booster costs more.

2. Obtain the 25-character activation code hidden under the protective layer on the back of the card.

3. Go to the loot code activation page on the official Battle.net site, choose your region and game realm, and enter the code. In return, the system gives you an in-game password for the NPC.

4. Fly to Booty Bay in the Cape of Stranglethorn. Find the goblin Landro Longshot on the lower pier — he stands in a purple shirt next to two bodyguards in cloaks bearing the Flame's crest.

5. Use the item once — the toy will be added to the account-wide Toy Box.

Don't confuse the retail toy with the same-named item from WoW Classic. In Burning Crusade Classic there is a separate version of the Dark Portal, granted for the quest "Special Delivery" when you purchase the Burning Crusade Classic Deluxe Edition, or sold in the Battle.net Shop for 9.99 USD. This purchase does not work on retail WoW.

• Effect: on activation a 10-second cast begins, during which a miniature Dark Portal unfolds in front of your character. When the cast finishes, you are teleported to your set inn.

• Cooldown: 30 minutes. The cooldown is shared with the Hearthstone and other equivalent toys — using one of them simultaneously puts the other on cooldown.

• Changing the home location: speaking to any innkeeper changes the return point just as it does for a regular Hearthstone — no separate binding is kept for the toy.

• Where it works: in the open world, capital cities, and normal dungeons. In raids and battlegrounds the cast is interrupted, just like the Hearthstone.

• Level required to use: none. The toy works from level 1, which is handy for alts at the start.

• Interrupted by: damage, movement, entering instances with combat mode. After an interruption it does not go on full cooldown — you can try again immediately.

• Combination: it does not work at the same time as other teleport toys such as the Ethereal Portal or the Dalaran Hearthstone — they all share the common Hearthstone cooldown.
