Dimensional Ripper - Area 52

Overview

Dimensional Ripper - Area 52 is a crafted teleport toy added to World of Warcraft in The Burning Crusade expansion. Its effect instantly transports you to Netherstorm — the floating islands in the eastern part of Outland and home of the goblin outpost Area 52. Since patch 7.0.3 (Legion), the item has been moved into the Toy Box, taking a permanent slot in your collection and no longer cluttering your inventory.

The toy is available only to engineers with the Goblin Engineering specialization. You can create it from a schematic taught by Kablamm Farboom — a goblin trainer in Area 52 itself. The use cooldown is 4 hours, and each activation carries a small chance of a teleport malfunction: classic "goblin tech" in true WoW fashion.

The tooltip describes the device succinctly: "Warps the fabric of space and transports you to Area 52 in Netherstorm." This is one of two long-range engineering teleports from the Burning Crusade era — gnome engineers have a symmetrical Ultrasafe Transporter: Toshley's Station, which leads to Blade's Edge Mountains instead of Netherstorm.

Why You Want This Toy

  • Free long-range teleport. Any goblin engineer at max Midnight level (90) gains a full portal to Outland — no meeting stones, no waiting on a mage and no hearthstone needed. It is especially valuable for farming Consortium reputation, mobs in Netherstorm and old Outland raids (Serpentshrine Cavern, Magtheridon's Lair, The Eye).
  • Account-wide status. Once added to the Toy Box, the portal is available on all your characters: you no longer need to craft a new "consumable" every 10 uses, as was the case before Legion. Craft it once — use it forever.
  • Unique visual effect. The activation animation is a distinctive "dimensional ripping" with multicolored particles and the sound of a goblin machine. There is nothing else like it in the Toy Box.
  • Part of collector meta-achievements. The toy counts toward all achievements for the number of items collected, including It's a Toy Wonderland! and Big Toy Box!.
  • Lore and humor. The teleport malfunctions are a separate charm of the collection: you may get stuck for an hour as a reddish "split spirit," be doubled in size, or have your character model swapped for the opposite faction. Many players deliberately wait for a malfunction just to take screenshots.

How to Obtain

This is a crafted toy. To add it to your Toy Box, you need to do the following in order: level Engineering to 350, choose the Goblin Engineering branch, reach Area 52 in Netherstorm and buy the schematic from the trainer. Below is a step-by-step plan.

Step 1. Level Engineering to 350

Up to 300 Engineering you level along any standard route of the classic stage. From 300 to 350 it is already the Outland era, with new recipes available from trainers in Zangarmarsh and Nagrand. We do not describe detailed routes here — that is a separate profession guide.

Step 2. Take the Goblin Engineering specialization

From the Cataclysm patches onward both branches — goblin and gnome — open up at the same time: you no longer need to make a hard choice and pay for "retraining" as in the Classic/TBC era. It is enough to go to the right NPC and take a series of introductory quests:

  • Goblin Engineering is learned in Gadgetzan (Tanaris) from Nixx Sprocketspring. The "Goblin Engineering" quest chain will send you to gather materials — Big Iron Bombs, sturdy dynamite and explosive sheep. The reward is lifelong access to goblin recipes, including our teleport.

If you have already done the "Gnomish Engineering" branch in the past — that is fine, both branches can be kept in parallel on one character.

Step 3. Reach Area 52

Area 52 is a goblin city in the middle of Netherstorm, the northeastern sector of Outland. If you already have a hearthstone bound here, or a mage with a portal to Shattrath — the trip takes mere minutes. If not:

  1. Via Shattrath. From any Horde/Alliance capital take a portal to Shattrath from the portal master. In Shattrath, head out of the city and fly north — Netherstorm borders Nagrand and Blade's Edge Mountains.
  2. On the Outland map move to the northeast. Area 52 is in the southern part of Netherstorm, with the entrance coordinates roughly as follows:
/way #3523 32 65 Area 52 (Netherstorm)
  1. Inside Area 52, look for goblin engineers near the central square.

Step 4. Buy the schematic from Kablamm Farboom

Kablamm Farboom is the goblin Engineering trainer in Area 52. He also sells the "Dimensional Ripper - Area 52" schematic for silver. Check the requirements: your character must have the Goblin Engineering specialization and Engineering skill 350 — otherwise the schematic will sit in your inventory but you will not be able to learn it.

Step 5. Gather the materials and craft the toy

A single device requires the following components:

Material Quantity Where to get
Adamantite Frame 1 Crafted by an engineer (4 Adamantite Bars + 1 Primal Earth)
Primal Fire 2 Drops from fire elementals in Outland or transmuted from 10 Mote of Fire
The Bigger One 2 Crafted by an engineer, schematic from a trainer in Outland
Handful of Fel Iron Bolts 4 Crafted by an engineer, basic apprentice schematic
Khorium Power Core 1 Crafted by an engineer (requires Khorium Bars)

Crafting is done at an anvil. After creating it, drop the device into the Toy Box with a right-click — at that point the gathering is complete, and you no longer need to make new devices.

Usage

The toy works directly from the Toy Box. Activation transports you to Area 52, with the landing point being the teleportation pad in the center of the city.

  • Cooldown: 4 hours. Shared with the other goblin teleport — Dimensional Ripper - Everlook. The cooldown is separate from the gnome teleports: if you have both specializations, you can use the goblin and gnome portals in sequence.
  • Cast: 10 seconds, interrupted by damage or movement. You need to stand in a quiet place with no aggressive mobs nearby.
  • Where it works: in any open-world zone where hearthstones are allowed. It does not work in instances (raids, dungeons, battlegrounds, arenas), in the Dragon Isles during certain story phases and in current seasonal "closed" Midnight zones.
  • Landing point: the teleport in Area 52, next to Kablamm Farboom. The zone is neutral — there will be no clashes with faction guards.

Possible teleport malfunctions

Goblin tech would not be goblin tech if it worked perfectly. In roughly 5% of cases the device triggers with a side effect. All malfunctions are harmless and wear off over time.

Malfunction Effect Duration
Soul Split: Evil The character takes on a reddish tint and translucency 60 minutes
Soul Split: Good The character takes on a golden tint and translucency 60 minutes
Image Matrix Failure The model changes to the opposite faction (a troll becomes a night elf, a gnome a tauren, etc.) 60 minutes
"Whoops!" You respawn high above the platform and fall — fall damage is possible Instant
Transporter Malfunction The character's size increases 60 minutes

Important: the teleport still happens, even on a malfunction. The debuff is a "souvenir," not a device failure.

Tips

1

Craft it right after taking the specialization. The materials are cheap by modern auction standards, and the toy is added to your account-wide collection on the first use. Spend an hour once — use it on any future alt.

2

Goblin or gnome — both, if you want. At max Midnight level (90) both branches can be learned in parallel. Then you will have teleports to Area 52 (Netherstorm) and to Toshley's Station (Blade's Edge Mountains) at the same time, with independent cooldowns — effectively two free portals to Outland without a mage.

3

Use it before farming Consortium reputation. If you are finishing up old Consortium reputation for Outland mounts and transmog, the teleport saves you a flight across half the Outland map on every run.

4

Don't be scared of malfunctions. The "Soul Split" and "Image Matrix Failure" effects are purely visual, and do not block story cutscenes, raids or quests. Many players deliberately catch the rare malfunction for screenshots.

5

Remember the shared cooldown with Everlook. If you have two goblin teleport toys (to Area 52 and to Everlook in Winterspring), you will not be able to use both in a row — their cooldown is shared. Choose by destination.

6

Counts toward collection achievements. Even if you do not plan to use the teleport often — add it to your collection. +1 to the collection counter and +1 step toward It's a Toy Wonderland! and Big Toy Box!.
