Drake Talon Cleaver — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

"Drake Talon Cleaver" is an epic two-handed axe that hails from the classic raid Blackwing Lair. It is a massive weapon with two broad blades the color of blackened steel, streaked with crimson, designed around the raid's dragon theme. The silhouette is heavy and angular, a perfect fit for the look of a grim warrior or death knight.
The weapon is a two-handed axe and occupies both weapon slots. At the current level cap its stats are scaled to a low range, so in modern content it is interesting first and foremost as a transmog appearance. The item has a signature "Mortal Strike" effect, but for transmogrification only its looks matter — one of the most recognizable dragon models from the era of the very first raids.
Source
The axe drops in the Blackwing Lair raid — one of the first raids in World of Warcraft, located deep within Blackrock Mountain.
- Blackwing Lair is located in the Burning Steppes zone, with the entrance near the top of Blackrock Spire.
- The cleaver drops from three twin dragons: Firemaw, Ebonroc, and Flamegor.
- The drop chance from each of these bosses is around 5%.
- The raid can be cleared solo at the current level, so farming the appearance comes down to weekly runs.
Since the chance from each dragon is low, the axe is most often obtained over several weeks of repeated clears. All three bosses come one after another in the same hall, so a single run gives you three chances at the drop at once.
Who It Suits Visually
- It harmonizes with dark plate sets in a crimson-and-black palette, echoing the color of the blades.
- It suits death knight and grim warrior looks thanks to its heavy, angular silhouette.
- It complements dragon- and scale-themed sets from the classic Blackrock Mountain raids well.
- It contrasts with bright paladin armor: on white-and-gold sets the dark axe looks debatable, but striking.
- It pairs with red and orange armor accents, supporting the raid's "fiery" dragon theme.
Tips
Visit Blackwing Lair once a week: the raid can be cleared solo, and the three dragons give three chances at the drop at once.
The most convenient way to reach the raid is to teleport to Blackrock Spire in the Burning Steppes, then head to the instance entrance.
Firemaw, Ebonroc, and Flamegor stand one after another in the same hall — kill all three per run so you don't lose any attempts.
If you get lucky faster with the regular guardians, take a look at the "Dragon's Touch" axe from the same raid — it has a higher drop chance.
At the current level the old boss mechanics pose no problem, and you need neither a healer nor a group.
Once you get it, check your appearance collection: the appearance unlocks account-wide and can immediately be applied at a transmogrifier.
