Overview

Ebonchill

Game iconEbonchill is a two-handed staff, the Frost Mage artifact weapon added in Legion. It is the great staff of Alodi: the crown holds a crystal of everlasting permafrost, frost runes run down the haft, and a faint icy mist trails from the tip. The appearance is a nod to the ancient Guardian Alodi and the fallen mage Arrexis, whose staff was taken by the eredar Balaadur.

Today Legion is outdated content, so the entire acquisition chain is soloed by a mage of any level. The artifact no longer offers combat value, but it remains sought after for transmogrification: Ebonchill has six model appearances, each with its own set of color variants (tints), and it is one of the most recognizable mage staves.

An important feature of the artifact system: the appearance and its tints are tied to the artifact itself. You only need to obtain Ebonchill once and unlock the variants you want, after which any of them can be applied to a suitable weapon through the standard transmogrification window.

Source

Ebonchill is awarded for a mage class quest. The chain is started by the mentor Meryl Felstorm in the mage order hall, the Hall of the Guardian, which is located in the upper tiers of Dalaran's Violet Citadel.

The chain consists of five quests and takes 15-25 minutes.

  • Finding Ebonchill — search the order's main hall and gather records of the staff's former owner, the mage Arrexis.
  • The Deadwind Site — teleport to the abandoned Kirin Tor camp near Karazhan, where a fateful ritual was once performed.
  • Daio the Decrepit — find the old warlock and prove your strength to him by defeating his demons.
  • Alodi's Gems — retrieve Alodi's mana gems from the Dalaran bank vault.
  • The Mage Hunter — travel with Meryl to Faronaar in Azsuna and recreate the ritual to lure out the hunter of mages.

In the final stage, the eredar Balaadur drags you into his own dimension, the Mage Hunter's Domain. Defeat him, and Ebonchill will fall from his hands. Pick up the staff to complete the quest and receive the artifact.

Who it suits visually

  • Suits frost-themed mage looks: the frost runes and the crown crystal harmonize with white-and-blue and steel palettes of sets.
  • Pairs with Legion cloth sets in shades of frost and arcane blue, for example the tier sets of the mage order hall.
  • The dark haft contrasts with light armor, so the appearance reads well on both white and black looks.
  • The hidden appearance with its fiery-icy glow fits dualistic mage concepts that combine ice and flame.
  • The long silhouette of the staff is flattering for static portrait looks and screenshots in the city.

Tips

1

Only a mage can complete the chain — the artifact is class-bound and cannot be obtained by other classes.

2

Ebonchill can be obtained on any of the three specializations, but the appearance is tied to the Frost specialization.

3

The hidden appearance depends on the order hall talent "Teleportation Nexus": with a daily chance, one of five portals will carry you to the Frozen Wastes, where the Everburning Crystal lies.

4

Tints of different appearances unlock through different activities: partly through order hall progression, partly through achievements, rated PvP and the Mage Tower scenario.

5

The Mage Tower appearance was time-limited in original Legion, but in later patches it returned to the game — check current availability before farming.

6

Since the content is outdated, the entire combat portion, including Balaadur, is easily soloed by a mage at max level in Midnight.

7

After unlocking, the appearance and its tints are available for transmogrification on any suitable staff, not only on the artifact itself.
