TBC Classic Engineering Profession Guide (Phase 3)

Engineering is the most unusual profession in the game. It brings almost no gold directly, but it gives you gear no one else has: bombs and grenades for combat control, rocket boots and a parachute for movement, goggles for every role, a portable mailbox, and a repair bot.

Some devices only work for engineers, so people take the profession for their own convenience and combat potential rather than for profit. Bombs genuinely affect fights, too: they ignore the cap on the number of targets and fit into the rotation for many classes.

An engineer almost has to have Mining: it burns through a huge amount of ore, and buying it all on the auction house is expensive.

The tiers up to skill 300 are learned in the capitals, while the master rank (300-375) is learned in Outland.

At skill 200 you choose a branch: Gnomish or Goblin Engineering. Gnomish gives more utility and useful gadgets, while Goblin focuses on explosives and damage. You can switch your choice, but for a fee and with the loss of the other branch's recipes.

Engineering is a profession with multi-stage crafting: first you make the components (bolts, tubes, explosives), and only then the finished devices out of them. Don't sell the intermediate parts — they're almost always needed at the next stage.

The repair bot is one of the profession's most useful items: it repairs your gear right in the raid.

Engineering pays off not through sales, but through what you wear on yourself. Assemble the goggles for your role, rocket boots, a parachute, and a portable mailbox — these items last the whole expansion.

Among consumables, it makes sense to keep a stock of bombs: they add damage and work as crowd control on packs. And the repair bot plus the teleports to Area 52 and Toshley's Station make you indispensable in any raid group.
