Howling Blade — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Howling Blade is a rare one-handed dagger with an uncommon, distinctive model that binds when equipped. The blade is rendered in a cold gray-steel palette with a massive broad edge and a wrapped grip — the silhouette reads even under light armor, which is why transmog collectors have long favored this item.
Historically the item dates all the way back to classic World of Warcraft, dropping from a rare mob in a zone for mid-level characters, and it still remains a relevant goal for hunters chasing the "grim northern dagger" visual style.
The dagger's effect is a chance on hit to trigger
Howling Blade, which reduces the target's attack power by 25 for 30 seconds. The effect means nothing for transmog, but it adds a bit of flavor to the source itself.
Source
The dagger drops from the rare mob Skhowl — a level 30 humanoid in the Hillsbrad Foothills zone. The spawn point sits near the entrance to a small cave in the west of the area, at roughly 43, 38.
- Drop chance per kill is around 24.31%.
- Skhowl is a rare mob with a long respawn timer, so the farm runs "on a loop": sweep the point, check it, then switch to an alt or another target.
- No group is needed — at the current level 90 he goes down in one or two hits with any class.
- There is no attempt limit; you can clear the point as many times as you need.
The slash command /way 267 43 38 Skhowl will lead you straight to the spawn point if a map navigation module is enabled.
Alternatives
The dagger has no known recolors with their own name and no confirmed counterparts with an identical model — this is the only way to obtain this exact silhouette. If you need a similar-toned weapon, look toward one-handed daggers from classic zones with a gray-steel blade and a wrapped grip: the easiest way is to pick them out directly in the transmog model browser under the "Dagger" slot.
If this specific model is what matters to you, the only reliable path runs through Skhowl.
Who It Suits Visually
- Fits sets in cold gray-blue tones — for example, early rogue and hunter kits with an emphasis on silvery metal.
- Looks good with dark leather chestpieces, where the bright blade serves as a pinpoint accent.
- Contrasts with vivid red-gold sets — a debatable but striking combination for "wanderer of the north" looks.
- Suits the looks of ranger and bounty-hunter characters, where the weapon is presented as a utilitarian tool rather than a parade artifact.
- Pairs well with any solid-color shield or off-hand of a neutral shade — the blade does not "pull" the silhouette toward itself.
Tips
Before heading in, check the respawn timer with any rare-mob tracker — Skhowl is worth flying out to the point right at the spawn window rather than at random.
It is most convenient to farm on classes with fast travel — a druid in travel form, a monk with Flying Serpent Kick, or a paladin with a mount bonus.
Bring a character with all portals unlocked — a teleport to Undercity or Silverpine Forest cuts the trip to the zone down to a couple of minutes.
If you have several alts close in level nearby, hit the point in turns — this increases the number of attempts without waiting for the respawn.
Don't forget to enable humanoid tracking on the map — Skhowl sometimes stands a little off the classic spot and gets lost in the slope textures.
The coordinates 43, 38 correspond to the entrance of a small cave at the junction of Hillsbrad Foothills and the Alterac Mountains — if you didn't find the mob right by the cave, circle around its perimeter.
The dagger's effect only triggers when used as intended — in your bags or in a transmog slot the procs won't activate, so don't be alarmed by the "silence" after you obtain it.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
