Howling Dagger — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Howling Dagger is an uncommon (green-quality) one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft with the Warlords of Draenor expansion. It is a compact stabbing weapon in the Draenor style: a short, broad blade with rough smithwork and a hilt wrapped in leather straps. The model belongs to the family of weapons handed out for quests and dropped as world loot on Draenor, so the silhouette looks utilitarian and restrained — without any glow or magical effects.
By its stats it is a light level 40 weapon: item level 16, speed 1.80, with bonuses to agility and stamina. The dagger suits specs that rely on agility — rogues first and foremost. But in transmog collecting the stats play no role: the appearance unlocks into the wardrobe when any character obtains the item, and from then on it can be applied to any suitable weapon.
The dagger binds on equip, so you can freely buy it or pass it through the auction house — you do not have to farm it yourself.
Source
Howling Dagger is a world drop from the Warlords of Draenor era. It has no single fixed owner: the item is listed in the shared loot table and drops from ordinary level 40 creatures all across Draenor. The drop chance from any specific mob is low, as with any world drop, but there are a great many sources, so the item shows up on the auction house regularly.
Where this drop appears:
- From rank-and-file level 40 mobs in the zones of Draenor — Gorgrond, Talador, Spires of Arak, Frostfire Ridge and Shadowmoon Valley.
- From elite open-world creatures — for example, from the Ogron Lifter at the Iron Docks in Gorgrond.
- From Draenor containers and caches (abandoned cargo, treasure sacks), which also pull loot from the shared table.
There are no restrictions on obtaining it: you can farm the item as many times as you like, with no weekly or personal limits. The fastest route is not farming mobs by hand but buying on the auction house: the price is usually symbolic, since the supply is steady.
Who it suits visually
- It suits "savage" and mercenary looks — the rough forging and leather-wrapped hilt pair well with the leather sets of Draenor and the Ridge.
- It harmonizes with a muted armor palette — grey-brown and bronze sets emphasize the blade's utilitarian look without drawing attention away to the weapon.
- A good paired dagger for a rogue who needs a restrained "working" knife without any glow — especially in stealth-themed looks.
- It contrasts with bright magical gear: against glowing armor a plain blade looks out of place, so it is better kept with grounded armor.
Tips
Do not waste time farming by hand for this dagger — check the auction house first: a Warlords of Draenor world drop is almost always on sale for a couple of gold.
If you do farm, pick zones with dense groups of level 40 mobs — Gorgrond and Talador are convenient thanks to their compact enemy camps.
The appearance unlocks into the wardrobe immediately upon obtaining the item — after that the dagger itself can be sold or disenchanted, the appearance is already saved.
The item binds on equip, so you can get it on one character and mail it to another before you equip it.
For collecting, difficulty does not matter: take the cheapest copy on the auction house, since stats and item level have no effect on transmog.
While farming Draenor mobs you will also have other green items from the same table dropping — along the way you can close out several weapon and armor appearances from this expansion at once.
The class for farming is not critical, but a character with high movement speed and strong area damage (a druid or paladin, for example) will clear camps faster.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
