Illidari-Bane Dagger — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

The
Illidari-Bane Dagger is a one-handed dagger of rare quality, added to World of Warcraft with The Burning Crusade expansion. Although it is technically a dagger, the model is unusually large for its weapon class: a wide blade with a serrated edge and a massive guard give the weapon a silhouette closer to a short sword. It is precisely this atypical size for a dagger that made it a notable transmog choice.
Sharp engraved runes run along the blade, glowing with a cold shimmer. This is part of the theme of the entire "Illidari-Bane" weapon series: the blades are forged after the anti-demonic prototypes of the Burning Legion, which is also reflected in the item's effect — "
Demon Slaying" increases attack power in combat against demons. The color scheme is kept in cold blue-steel tones, which fits the dagger into the demon-hunting and Illidan-themed aesthetic of Outland.
Source
The Illidari-Bane Dagger cannot be looted from a mob — it is awarded as one of the reward options for the final quest of a long chain in Outland. The chain begins in Shadowmoon Valley, while the main work of crafting the blade takes place in Terokkar Forest.
The quest chain step by step:
- The starting point is the quest Illidari-Bane Shard. The item that triggers the chain drops from Legion mobs in Shadowmoon Valley; the shard must be brought to your faction's commander at the fortress near the zone.
- Next the chain leads to the quest The Hermit Smith — you are directed to the master weaponsmith David Wayne at Wayne's Refuge, his hideout in Terokkar Forest.
- David Wayne asks you to gather materials for the forging. At this stage you complete the quest The Lexicon Demonica — the book must be obtained from Grandmaster Vorpil in the Shadow Labyrinth dungeon.
- In the quest Bane of the Illidari, the smith forges a blank for you — the
Forged Illidari-Bane Blade. - The finale is the quest Quenching the Blade. The blank must be tempered in the lava pools near the summit of Hand of Gul'dan in Shadowmoon Valley, after which you return to David Wayne for your reward.
It is at the completion of "Quenching the Blade" that you choose your weapon. The Illidari-Bane Dagger is one of several offered options; if you pick a different blade, you will no longer be able to obtain this dagger on the same character. The chain can be completed only once per character, so you cannot come back for the reward a second time.
The quests belong to The Burning Crusade content and are easily completed solo on any modern character. The main delay is gathering the reagents for the smith and the travel between Terokkar Forest and Shadowmoon Valley.
Who it suits visually
- It suits demon-hunting and demon hunter looks: the weapon's theme is directly tied to the fight against the Legion and the Illidari.
- It looks good with plate and mail sets from Outland in a blue-steel palette — the blade's rune glow echoes the cold accents of The Burning Crusade armor.
- Thanks to the atypically large blade for a dagger, it suits characters who want a "hefty" blade: the weapon class remains a dagger, but the silhouette is closer to a short sword.
- A matching set of the Illidari-Bane Dagger and the Illidari-Bane Spellblade gives two identical blades for rogues and other specs that use two daggers.
- It contrasts with dark and crimson sets: the cold glow of the runes stands out against such armor, making it an accent rather than a background element of the look.
Tips
The chain is more convenient to run on a character of level 60 and above — the quests are old, and the whole series wraps up in a single trip without group help.
You can only start the chain after you loot the starting item from Legion mobs in Shadowmoon Valley — without it, the quest "Illidari-Bane Shard" will not appear.
Keep money or reagents for the smith on hand in advance: the delay between chain steps is most often caused precisely by gathering materials for David Wayne.
On the final quest, choose your reward carefully — the dagger, two swords, and the spellblade are offered as mutually exclusive options, and you cannot change the choice on this character later.
If you specifically want the dagger appearance but your particular spec does not use daggers, take the Illidari-Bane Dagger anyway when turning in the quest — for the appearance collection, what matters is the fact of obtaining the item.
To collect both daggers of the series for a matching look, run two characters through the chain and take the dagger on one and the spellblade on the other.
The appearance unlocks in the collection once you obtain the item, so the dagger itself can be safely sold or disenchanted afterward.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
