Overview

Irontree Dagger

Game iconIrontree Dagger is a one-handed dagger of uncommon quality, added to World of Warcraft in patch 4.0.3 of the Cataclysm expansion. The model inv_knife_1h_cataclysm_b_01 echoes the visual style of early Cataclysm daggers: a short, straight blade of dark metal with a lengthwise stiffening rib and a rough, wrapped hilt with a faceted pommel. The silhouette reads as a "ranger's field knife" or a "beast hunter's weapon" — without ornate engraving or magical effects.

In terms of game stats it is an item level 36 piece with a level 32 character requirement: 3–5 damage, 1.80 speed, bonuses of +2 Agility and +3 Stamina. For transmogrification today only the model matters — the stats and level are irrelevant, as long as the character can hold a dagger.

The item belongs to the "world drop" category of the Cataclysm era: the same model appears on mobs in several zones and in several container rewards, so the farm runs across multiple sources at once.

Source

This is a Cataclysm world drop — the item has no single "main" NPC; it drops from several level-appropriate targets and from container rewards of the same expansion. Confirmed sources according to Wowhead:

What this means in practice:

  • The drop chance from each mob is low: this is a random drop from the era's general green-item table, and Wowhead does not give an exact figure for a specific NPC.
  • At max level, Halls of Origination and Baradin Hold are cleared fully solo in a few minutes, so the farm is set on a weekly run.
  • Elementium Lockboxes drop from various Cataclysm mobs and pile up in the inventory of those who farm green items for disenchanting; a rogue with leveled lockpicking can open them himself, while others find it easier to open them at a rogue friend's or to wait for a seasonal event that opens chests.
  • Zen'Vorka's Cache is the most stable source: 30 Mark of the World Tree at the Molten Front are gathered in a day of daily quests, and the reward contains a random Cataclysm-era green item with a chance to get this very dagger.
  • Entrance coordinates for Halls of Origination: the dungeon is located in Uldum, entry point /way Uldum 71.9 51.6. Baradin Hold is in Tol Barad; access to the raid is granted by the faction currently holding the zone.

Who it suits visually

  • A "ranger" or "monster hunter" look in the style of early Cataclysm: dark metal and a leather wrap sit well on leather sets of the era.
  • Rogue and hunter sets in a brown-and-steel palette — the dagger works as a backdrop, not pulling attention with bright effects.
  • A paired layout with another Cataclysm green dagger in the off-hand for a rogue gives a coherent "field" silhouette without era dissonance.
  • Themed builds like "forest scout" / "borderland sentry" in green-and-brown tones — the blade reads visually as a utilitarian rather than a ceremonial blade.
  • A contrast with heavy plate armor: thanks to its compact silhouette, the dagger stands out but does not clash with a massive set.

Tips

1

At max level, farming all sources is fully solo: Halls of Origination is run in 8–12 minutes in full, Baradin Hold in 3–5 minutes if the faction controls Tol Barad.

2

The Earth and Air Wardens stand on patrols along the main corridors of Halls of Origination — there is no need to seek them out separately, they fit nicely into a regular "clear" of the dungeon for other transmogs and reputation.

3

The Demon Containment Unit is a group of mini-bosses in Baradin Hold: to enter the raid, your faction must control Tol Barad. If there is no control, focus on the other sources.

4

Stockpile Elementium Lockboxes in the bank: a batch of 20–30 is easier to open all at once at a single rogue friend's; the chance of a dagger from one box is low, the accumulated volume is what matters.

5

Zen'Vorka's Cache is the most predictable source in terms of time: you know exactly that you are buying one bag every few days. It is slow, but without dependence on random mob drops.

6

Alongside farming the dagger you collect a huge pool of other Cataclysm green loot — it is profitable to disenchant it for dust or to sell on the auction house.

7

The item is bound on pickup from all the listed sources except an opened Elementium Lockbox: the box's contents become yours in any case, but you will not be able to move the dagger between alts.

8

If you have a rogue with leveled lockpicking, it makes sense to make him the box collector across several characters — the whole flow of opened boxes hinges on a single "opener".
