Lightningflash — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Lightningflash is a rare-quality one-handed gun added to World of Warcraft in the Cataclysm expansion (patch 4.0.3). It is a compact rifle with the distinctive "techno-gothic" silhouette of Cataclysm: a massive barrel, an engraved stock, and dark metal with cold bluish highlights that echo its name.
For transmog, the value of Lightningflash lies in its model. It is the recognizable dwarven-goblin firearm style of that era, which fits well on hunters and rogues who prefer a gun over a bow or crossbow. The item level (38) and stats are irrelevant today — the weapon is taken purely for its appearance.
Source
Lightningflash drops in the Vortex Pinnacle dungeon (Cataclysm) from the final boss, Asaad.
- The boss is Asaad, a hovering djinn lord of lightning at the top of the dungeon.
- The difficulty is Heroic mode: the drop of this gun is confirmed there.
- The drop chance is about 6.4% per kill, so several runs are usually required.
- Group or solo — a Cataclysm-era dungeon at max level in Midnight clears solo without trouble, and the Asaad fight has no mechanics that block a solo run.
- Attempt limit — Heroic dungeons reset daily, but when entering solo you can re-enter the dungeon and kill the boss repeatedly in a single day.
The Vortex Pinnacle is located in the Twilight Highlands — the entrance floats in the air above the zone. The fastest way to get there is through the Dungeon Finder interface or by flying to the entrance if you have this Cataclysm region unlocked.
Alternatives
Lightningflash uses one of the standard firearm models of the Cataclysm era. The same barrel silhouette appears on a number of guns obtained in dungeons and raids of the same period, but with a different color scheme.
- If you want this exact look, Lightningflash is its most accessible source: one specific boss with a noticeable drop chance, no raid and no reputation required.
- Cataclysm guns with a similar silhouette differ in the color of the metal and the plating — it is worth comparing the options right in the in-game appearance interface, filtering firearms by this expansion.
- There are few confirmed exact recolors of this particular model with the same design, so for the collection it is easier to close out the look with Lightningflash itself.
Who It Suits Visually
- Suitable for hunters and rogues building an "engineering-marksman" look in the spirit of dwarven and goblin gunsmiths.
- Harmonizes with dark leather and mail sets from Cataclysm in a blue-steel palette.
- Looks striking against light "holy" sets — a debatable but memorable choice for a "gunslinger out of place" look.
- Fits steampunk and techno looks where the gun, rather than the bow, is the meaningful focal point.
Tips
It is most convenient to farm solo at max level: you quickly reach Asaad and re-enter the dungeon until the gun drops.
A chance of about 6% means that, on average, it will take roughly fifteen to twenty runs — be patient and combine farming with other activities.
Any class can handle Asaad solo, but classes with high mobility run through the dungeon to the boss noticeably faster.
The appearance unlocks automatically when you obtain the item, even if your class cannot use firearms — the main thing is to pick it up as loot.
Do not confuse Lightningflash with similarly named items: the correct source is specifically Asaad in the Vortex Pinnacle, not the open world.
If the gun has already dropped and the look is collected, you can safely sell duplicates to a vendor — they add nothing new to the collection.
