Overview

Living Root

Game icon"Living Root" is a rare-quality two-handed staff that hails from the classic era of World of Warcraft. Its model is shaped like a living tree root: a twisted wooden haft with knotted growths and fresh greenery sprouting at the head. It is one of the most recognizable low-level "nature" staves, prized for its organic silhouette free of glow and metal.

In terms of stats it is a staff with Intellect and Stamina that grants Critical Strike and Haste rating, which is why back in the day it went to druids, priests, shamans, and mages. Today nobody cares about its stats — the item is farmed purely for its transmog appearance.

Source

The staff drops from the elite boss Verdan the Everliving, a massive elemental that dwells in the Wailing Caverns dungeon in the Northern Barrens.

  • The drop chance is around 27%, which is very high for a rare item.
  • Verdan the Everliving stands in the far part of the dungeon; the coordinates of the fight are /way 55.4 46.5.
  • You can collect the loot an unlimited number of times: the dungeon resets, and if luck is not on your side the run is easy to repeat.
  • The item becomes soulbound on pickup, so you cannot hand it to another character — you have to farm it on the hero who actually wants the look.

Wailing Caverns is designed for levels 8–30, so at max level the dungeon is cleared solo in a matter of minutes.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It harmonizes with druid outfits in green-and-brown tones and with any "nature" restoration sets.
  • It fits Elemental shaman looks and sets that emphasize wood and foliage.
  • It looks strikingly contrasted in the hands of a priest or mage in light cloth robes — a debatable but memorable choice.
  • It pairs well with nature-themed mounts and companions for a cohesive "druidic" image.

Tips

1

The optimal farming class is any with high mobility and area damage, so you can dash through the dungeon to the boss quickly.

2

Enter on Normal difficulty at max level: the whole path to Verdan the Everliving is killed without stopping.

3

If the appearance does not drop on the first try, leave the dungeon and re-enter — the daily entry counter for old dungeons is high, so you can do many runs in a row.

4

Apply the appearance at the transmogrification forge right away: the item is soulbound, and you will not be able to sell it after unlocking the look without losing the source.

5

Along the way, Wailing Caverns also drops several other classic weapon and armor appearances, so the run is useful for the rest of a collector's goals too.
