Overview

Mimiron's Head

Game iconMimiron's Head is one of the most iconic and rarest mounts in World of Warcraft, added in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion (patch 3.1.0). It is a flying mount shaped like a giant mechanical gnome head, created by the titanic keeper Mimiron. The item's flavor text states that the mount is "the largest mechanical gnome head in Azeroth," and it really does look impressive — your character rides atop a hovering metal head with spinning propellers.

The mount drops from Yogg-Saron, the final boss of the Ulduar raid, but only under a special condition — the fight must be completed without the aid of the four Keepers. This is the so-called Alone in the Darkness mode, the hardest version of the Yogg-Saron encounter. The drop chance is roughly 1%. Before Cataclysm the mount was a guaranteed drop, but as of patch 4.0 the chance was lowered to its current value.

Why You Want This Mount

  • One of the rarest mounts in the game — a ~1% drop chance from a raid's final boss in a special mode makes Mimiron's Head a trophy you don't see often. This mount is instantly recognizable and earns respect from other players
  • A unique model — no other mount in the game looks like this: a flying mechanical gnome head with propellers. A completely unique design with no equivalent
  • A flying mount — it works as a full-fledged flying mount in every zone where flight is allowed
  • Account-wide — once obtained, the mount unlocks for all of your characters, regardless of faction and class
  • Quick weekly farming — clearing Ulduar at level 80 takes 10–15 minutes, and the raid can be soloed in full
  • Bonus loot — while farming the mount you can also collect the unique Tier 8 and Tier 8.5 transmog sets, as well as earn the Glory of the Ulduar Raider achievement

How to Get to Ulduar

Ulduar is located in the northern part of the Storm Peaks zone in Northrend. The raid sits on a high platform, and the only way to reach the entrance is on a flying mount.

  1. Open the map of Northrend and find the Storm Peaks zone
  2. Use the portal to Dalaran (Northrend) from any capital city. Dalaran is located directly above Crystalsong Forest, from where it is convenient to fly north
  3. Fly to the Ulduar complex in the northern part of the Storm Peaks. The raid entrance is on a raised platform

There are no quest chains or prerequisites to enter the raid — simply fly up to the entrance and step inside. Make sure the raid difficulty is set to 25 players before entering.

Setting the Raid Difficulty

Mimiron's Head only drops in the 25-player version of the raid. Before entering Ulduar, be sure to check your settings:

  1. Right-click your character portrait
  2. Select "Raid Difficulty" → "25 Player"
  3. Enter the raid

In Ulduar there is no toggle between normal and heroic mode — instead, the difficulty of each boss is adjusted through in-game mechanics (hard modes). For Yogg-Saron, hard mode is activated by refusing the Keepers' aid.

Raid Route — Speed Clear

When solo farming at level 90, every boss dies instantly. Your task is to reach Yogg-Saron as fast as possible. A full clear takes 10–15 minutes.

Mandatory Bosses

To open the path to Yogg-Saron, you must kill the following bosses:

  1. Flame Leviathan — the first boss, a vehicle fight. At level 90, simply hop into a Siege Engine or Demolisher and destroy the boss. After the victory, access to the main complex and the teleporters opens up
  2. XT-002 Deconstructor — kill the boss to open the teleport to the Antechamber of Ulduar. At level 90 the fight lasts a few seconds
  3. Kologarn — a stone giant on the bridge. Killing him opens access to the Shattered Walkway and the four Keeper wings
  4. The four Keepers — all four are required to open the passage to Yogg-Saron:
  5. General Vezax — the penultimate boss, guarding the descent to Yogg-Saron's prison
  6. Yogg-Saron — the final boss, the source of the mount

Bosses You Can Skip

Optimal Route

  1. Enter the raid → hop into a vehicle → kill Flame Leviathan
  2. After the victory, use the teleporter at the entrance → move to XT-002 Deconstructor
  3. Kill XT-002 → use the teleporter → move to the Antechamber of Ulduar
  4. Kill Kologarn on the bridge
  5. Move through the halls to the four Keepers and kill them in any order
  6. After killing all four Keepers, descend to General Vezax
  7. Kill Vezax → enter the Prison of Yogg-Saron

How to Activate Alone in the Darkness Mode

This is the most important step in farming the mount. If you make a mistake, the mount will not drop.

After you kill each Keeper (Hodir, Thorim, Freya, Mimiron), they will offer you their aid in the Yogg-Saron fight. Do not talk to them and do not accept their help. If you accidentally accept the aid of even one Keeper, Mimiron's Head will not drop.

Before starting the Yogg-Saron fight, check that:

  • None of the Keepers are activated (the indicators in the interface are not lit)
  • The fight difficulty text shows "Alone in the Darkness" or "No Lights"

If you accidentally activate a Keeper, leave the raid, reset the instance and run it again. That said, at level 90 this doesn't take long.

The Yogg-Saron Fight — Solo at Level 90

At the current max level (90 in Midnight) the Yogg-Saron fight presents no trouble at all, even without the Keepers' aid. The whole fight lasts under a minute.

Fight Phases

Phase 1 — Sara and the guardians. Kill Yogg-Saron's guardians near Sara. After several guardians die close to Sara, the second phase begins.

Phase 2 — Tentacles and portals. Constrictor Tentacles and Yogg-Saron's maws appear. At level 90, just destroy everything around you. Portals into Yogg-Saron's mind will open — enter one of them, kill the brain and return before the Induce Madness cast finishes. If you don't make it out in time, your character will be mind-controlled — watch the sanity bar.

Phase 3 — Yogg-Saron reveals himself. Finish off the boss. At level 90 this takes a few seconds.

The Only Danger

At level 90 the only risk is the Induce Madness mechanic in the second phase. If the sanity bar reaches zero, your character will fall under the boss's control and the fight will have to be restarted. Kill the brain in the portal quickly and exit right away. At the current gear level this poses no difficulty.

Farming Optimization

Weekly Cycle

Ulduar has a weekly lockout — one character can kill Yogg-Saron once per week (the reset happens on Wednesday for European servers, on Tuesday for American ones). Each kill is one chance at the mount.

Farming on Multiple Characters

The most efficient way to speed up obtaining the mount is to use multiple characters. Each additional character gives a separate attempt per week.

Characters per week Attempts per month Chance per month (~1%)
1 4 ~4%
5 20 ~18%
10 40 ~33%
15 60 ~45%

With a ~1% drop chance and a single character, it will statistically take around 100 attempts (roughly 2 years of weekly farming). With ten characters, the timeframe shrinks to a few months.

Alternative Ways to Obtain It

  • Black Market Auction House — Mimiron's Head appears periodically on the Black Market Auction House with a starting bid of 20,000 gold. The final price usually reaches the gold cap
  • Timewalking: Wrath of the Lich King — during the Wrath of the Lich King Timewalking event, completing the weekly quest awards a Cache of Time-Lost Treasures, which has a small chance to contain Mimiron's Head

Tips

1

Check the difficulty before entering — make sure it is set to 25 players. If you enter on 10, the mount won't drop and your lockout will be wasted

2

Don't talk to the Keepers — after killing each Keeper, do not interact with them. Any activation of their aid robs you of your chance at the mount

3

Use a high-mobility class — a Druid, Demon Hunter or Monk lets you move through the raid faster thanks to movement speed bonuses

4

Memorize the route — after a few clears you'll be doing it in 10 minutes. Most of the time is spent running between the Keepers

5

Collect transmog along the way — Ulduar contains some of the most beautiful transmog sets in the game (Tier 8 and Tier 8.5). While you farm the mount, you'll assemble a full collection of armor appearances

6

Don't forget the achievements — Alone in the Darkness counts as one of the achievements for Glory of the Ulduar Raider

7

Use your Hearthstone after the fight — after killing Yogg-Saron there's no need to run back to the exit. Use your Hearthstone or any teleport for a quick exit
