Reins of the Brown Dragon Turtle

Reins of the Brown Dragon Turtle is a ground turtle mount that was added all the way back in the Mists of Pandaria expansion and remains available in The War Within (patch 11.1, 2026). It is one of the so-called pandaren racial mounts: visually it is a stocky brown dragon turtle, slow-looking but obedient and reliable.

The mount is sold for a purely symbolic 1 gold coin by two vendors — in Stormwind and in Orgrimmar. Behind that low price, however, lies an important condition: the reins can only be purchased by a pandaren or by a character of any other race who has reached Exalted with the faction of their side — Tushui (Alliance) or Huojin (Horde).

Access is open to both factions, and the mount works on all characters on the account once it has been learned. Movement speed depends solely on your current riding skill: the mount is neither fast nor flying, and it fully mirrors the stats of an ordinary ground steed.

The brown dragon turtle is a find for collectors and fans of the Pandaria theme. The mount stands out with its recognizable silhouette and warm brown shell coloring, which pairs well with the outfits of most classes. It is a great fit for anyone collecting the full set of dragon turtles in all three colors (brown, black and great brown).

The mount also counts toward your overall collection total and pushes you closer to the Lord of the Reins achievement and the reward series for 250, 300, 400 and more mounts. The 1 gold price makes it one of the cheapest ways to bump up the counter if you have already met the reputation requirement or are playing a pandaren.

Finally, the turtle is a rare example of a mount you can obtain without ever leaving the capital city. It is a convenient choice for alts and farming characters who need a simple ground steed without additional quests.

To purchase the mount, one of two conditions must be met:

• Your character is a pandaren (for the Alliance or the Horde).
• Your character is of any other race and has Exalted reputation with the Tushui faction (Alliance) or Huojin faction (Horde).

Additionally, you need the basic riding skill (Apprentice) and level 10 — but in The War Within these requirements are met automatically long before the purchase. Character level in 2026 does not matter: the mount itself does not scale, but it is also not gated by level. Pandaren gain access to the purchase immediately after choosing a side in the starting zone, the Wandering Isle.

For non-pandaren the path is long: Tushui and Huojin reputation is gained only through a tabard in The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King dungeons. The Tushui tabard is sold by the Tushui Adherent in Stormwind, the Huojin tabard by a corresponding representative in Orgrimmar. Heroic Northrend dungeons grant about 3,000 reputation per run and let you reach Exalted in roughly 30–40 runs.

The mount costs 1 gold. It binds on pickup and cannot be passed to another player.

1. Check your character's race and reputation. If you are a pandaren — go straight to step 3. If not, open the reputation window (default key U) and find Tushui or Huojin in the Classic section.
2. If you lack the required reputation, buy the faction tabard from the Tushui Adherent in Stormwind (Alliance) or its counterpart in Orgrimmar (Horde), put it on and run TBC and Wrath of the Lich King dungeons on Heroic until you reach Exalted.
3. Head to your faction's capital. Alliance — teleport or portal to Stormwind, Horde — to Orgrimmar.
4. Alliance: go to the Eastern Earthshrine (the district next to the main portal hall) and find Old Whitenose. He is a pandaren merchant standing beside a group of dragon turtles.
5. Horde: head to the Valley of Honor and seek out Odai the Turtlemaster — he also stands near his charges.
6. Open the vendor window and buy the Reins of the Brown Dragon Turtle for 1 gold. If you wish, you can also purchase the black and great brown versions right there.
7. Use the reins to learn the mount: it is automatically added to your collection and becomes available to all characters on the account.

If you play a pandaren, no farming is required — just reach the vendor and buy. The far more interesting case is when you need to raise Tushui or Huojin reputation from scratch.

The fastest path is the Heroic dungeons of Wrath of the Lich King. They can be soloed at level 80 in 10–15 minutes, and with the tabard equipped the bosses grant 250 reputation each while regular elite enemies give 15. A single run nets about 3,000 reputation. Reaching Exalted from zero requires 42,000 points, that is roughly 15–20 runs.

Try to choose dungeons with densely packed pulls and minimal backtracking — for example, the Oculus, Trial of the Champion or the Halls of Reflection. If you have the Wrath Heroic auto-queue enabled, you will earn reputation in parallel with completing the daily Cataclysm cave run.

In a single city visit you can pick up all three racial turtles at once (brown, black and great brown), so save up 11 gold and grab the full set in one trip.
