Reins of the Purple Dragon Turtle

The Reins of the Purple Dragon Turtle is a ground turtle mount in a vivid purple-violet color scheme, introduced in the Mists of Pandaria expansion and still in the game as of The War Within (patch 11.1, 2026). It is one of the pandaren racial mounts, and alongside the brown, black, and great brown versions it sells for a symbolic 1 gold.

The key to obtaining it is not your level or dungeons, but belonging to the pandaren race or your reputation with their factions. The mount is available to both sides of the conflict: for the Alliance the reins are sold by a vendor in Stormwind, for the Horde in Orgrimmar. Visually it is a stocky turtle with a massive purple shell and an expressive face, looking more like an unhurried dragon than a typical reptile.

The mount is account-wide: once learned it will be available to all characters on your account. Its speed depends entirely on your riding skill — it has no built-in speed boost and cannot fly; it is an ordinary ground mount with a unique model.

The purple dragon turtle is a great pickup for collectors and fans of the pandaren theme. Its rich purple tone looks great in screenshots and around town, and the model itself is comfortable to use thanks to its calm running animation and large silhouette that is hard to miss.

The mount counts toward your overall collection tally and brings you closer to achievements like Lord of the Reins and the reward series for 250, 300, 400, and 500 mounts. The 1 gold price makes this turtle one of the cheapest items on any checklist for padding your counter.

Finally, if you are already farming Tushui or Huojin reputation for the pandaren turtles, picking up the purple version makes sense right away: you are already approaching Exalted, and in a single visit to the capital you can buy all four turtles.

To purchase the mount, one of two conditions must be met:

• Your character is a pandaren (for the Alliance or the Horde).
• Your character is any other race and has Exalted reputation with the Tushui (Alliance) or Huojin (Horde) faction.

In addition, the basic riding skill (Apprentice) is required. In The War Within characters get it automatically at the starting levels, so you do not need to pay for it separately. Level does not matter in 2026: the mount does not scale and is not locked behind character level.

Pandaren gain access to the purchase right after choosing a side in the Wandering Isle starting zone. For non-pandaren the path is longer: Tushui and Huojin reputation is raised with a tabard in The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King dungeons — later instances no longer grant reputation with these factions.

The mount costs 1 gold. Binding — on pickup; it cannot be transferred to another player.

1. Check your character's race and reputation. If you are a pandaren — skip straight to step 3. If not, open the reputation window (default key U) and find Tushui or Huojin in the Classic section.
2. If you lack the required reputation, buy the faction tabard from the pandaren representative in the capital, put it on, and run The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King heroic dungeons until you reach Exalted.
3. Head to your faction's capital. Alliance — portal or teleport to Stormwind, Horde — to Orgrimmar.
4. Alliance: go to the Eastern Earthshrine and find Old Whitenose — he stands next to his dragon turtles, including the purple one.
5. Horde: in the Valley of Honor, find the pandaren camp and Oadi the Turtle Lord; he is located right where all the turtle colors graze.
6. Open the vendor window and buy the Reins of the Purple Dragon Turtle for 1 gold. If you have the gold, you can grab the other colors there too.
7. Use the reins to learn the mount: it will be added to your collection automatically and unlocked for all characters on the account.

For a pandaren this is literally a walk to a neighboring district of the capital — there is nothing to optimize. The more interesting case is when you need to raise Tushui or Huojin reputation from scratch on a character of another race.

The fastest way is the Wrath of the Lich King heroic dungeons. At level 80 they are soloed in 10–15 minutes, and bosses with the tabard equipped grant 250 reputation each, while regular elite enemies grant 15. A single run nets about 3,000 reputation. From zero to Exalted takes roughly 42,000 — that is 15–20 runs.

Choose dungeons with densely packed groups and minimal backtracking: The Oculus, Trial of the Champion, or Halls of Reflection. Alongside reputation you will be closing out the daily Wrath heroic search if you have it active, and collecting incidental loot to sell.

In a single visit to the capital you can grab all four racial turtles at once: brown, black, great brown, and purple. Save up 11 gold and take the full set in one trip — it saves both time and movement between vendors.
