Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
Reins of the Great Blue Dragon Turtle is a ground mount that teaches you to summon a large blue dragon turtle. The item was added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion and is still available in the current version of the game, The War Within (patch 11.1, 2026).
Dragon turtles are racial mounts of the pandaren people. The creature stands out with its massive armored shell, calm temperament and measured gait — exactly the kind of companion that suits the pandaren in spirit: strength, patience and readiness for a long journey. The "Great" version differs from the regular one with a larger model and a more imposing silhouette.
The mount's speed matches your current riding skill: +60% with Apprentice Riding and +100% with Journeyman Riding. At character level 80 and above you automatically learn all the riding skills you need.
To buy the mount you must meet one of two conditions:
Additional requirements:
Reaching the vendor couldn't be easier — both NPCs are located in capital cities:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Mount type | Ground |
| Family | Dragon turtle |
| Speed | +60% / +100% (by riding skill) |
| Source | Purchase from a vendor |
| Vendor (Horde) | Old Whitenose, Orgrimmar, Valley of Honor |
| Vendor (Alliance) | Old Yang, Stormwind, Eastern Earthshrine |
| Price | 10 gold |
| Reputation | Exalted with Huojin (Horde) or Tushui (Alliance). Pandaren need no reputation. |
| Expansion | Mists of Pandaria |
| Item ID | 87803 |
If you already have a pandaren of any faction, you can skip all the reputation steps and fly straight to the vendor. For all other races, the path runs through reputation farming.
The tabard is given out for free in the capital:
The tabard grants reputation for killing elite enemies and bosses in dungeons — the key farming tool.
With the tabard on, enter the heroic dungeons of past expansions. The biggest gains come from:
Reputation for killing an elite mob is 15 points, for a boss 250 points (with guild bonuses and Akolik's Acid-Soaked Robes the percentage can be higher).
When the reputation bar reaches "Exalted" (42,000 points from "Friendly"), head to your vendor and buy the
Reins of the Great Blue Dragon Turtle for 10 gold. Use the item — it will be added to your mount collection forever, across your entire account.
The vendors are located in the same zone where the turtles dwell — you can't miss it, the vendor's appearance literally points to the mounts around him.
If you recently created a pandaren, don't pick a faction right away: the quest line on the Wandering Isle itself leads you to the choice between Tushui and Huojin, and you'll gain starting reputation automatically.
The mount counts toward all "pandaren" meta-achievements tied to the collection, so don't put off buying it.
After reaching Exalted the reputation bar stops growing, but you can keep accumulating points up to 999 beyond "Exalted" — this comes in handy if Blizzard adds new rewards.
If you are a collector, be sure to grab the Tabard of the Huojin Pandaren or the
Grand Commendation of the Lorewalkers for your wardrobe nearby — they look great in transmog sets.
In The War Within the mount is fully compatible with the dynamic flight system on other mounts — you can freely switch between the turtle and flying mounts.
