Overview

Reins of the Black Riding Goat

Reins of the Black Riding Goat is a ground mount from Mists of Pandaria, representing one of the three Pandaren riding goats. The black variant is awarded for reaching Exalted with The Tillers faction and is sold by the quartermaster Gina Mudclaw in Halfhill, Valley of the Four Winds. In the Midnight patch, the mount remains available at level 80 unchanged: Tillers reputation is still earned through daily quests and the Sunsong Ranch farm.

This is not a rare boss drop but a classic "reputation" reward. If you already raised The Tillers earlier, the mount is available immediately from Gina. If not, budget around two to three weeks of regular daily visits.

Why You Want This Mount

  • A unique mountain goat model with a dark coloring — one of three colors in the set (black, white, brown).
  • Counts toward the collection achievements in the "Mountain o' Mounts" and "Brood of Brothers" series for paired goats.
  • Pairs with the parallel farm for Reins of the White Riding Goat and Reins of the Brown Riding Goat: both are bought from the same quartermaster and require the same reputation.
  • The path to the mount also grants you your own farm in the Valley of the Four Winds — a steady source of herbs, vegetables, and rare items.
  • Classic Pandaria content plays out quickly at level 90 and remains a pleasant break from the usual Midnight agenda.

Requirements and How to Get There

  • Minimum character level: 32 (realistically comfortable at any level, up to 90).
  • Riding skill: Apprentice (basic).
  • Reputation: Exalted with the The Tillers faction.
  • Gold for the purchase: 1500 gold (around 1166 gold with the Exalted discount).
  • Location: Halfhill, Valley of the Four Winds (Pandaria).
  • How to get there: take the portal to Pandaria from Orgrimmar or Stormwind, then head south from Frostwall. At level 90, the fastest option is to use the old-continents travel table or a mage's direct portal.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Fly into Halfhill, Valley of the Four Winds. Find Farmer Yoon at the western edge of the market (coordinates ~52, 48).
  2. Take the introductory chain "The New Pandaren" from Yoon — it unlocks your personal Sunsong Ranch farm and your first daily quest.
  3. Complete the Tillers daily quests every day: one from Yoon and one each from the NPCs you have "friendship" with. At first only one task is available; as friendship grows, up to five per day.
  4. Plant and harvest crops on your farm: each plot gives 50 reputation when harvested. At maximum plots this is a noticeable boost.
  5. Raise friendship with individual farmers by giving them gifts (for example, a Ruby Shard) and completing their quests. Each new "friend" unlocks a new daily.
  6. Once you reach Honored, buy the Grand Commendation of the Tillers from Gina — it doubles reputation gained and applies to all characters on the account.
  7. Keep coming back every day until you reach Exalted. On average it takes 2-3 weeks of calendar time.
  8. As soon as Exalted status is confirmed, walk up to Gina Mudclaw in Halfhill and buy the "Reins of the Black Riding Goat" for 1500 gold. The mount is added to your collection account-wide right away.

Farming Optimization

  • Level up all the Tillers farmers to "best friend" right away: the more friends, the more dailies per day.
  • Don't skip the harvest a single day: 16 plots at 50 reputation each give a tangible bonus on top of the quests.
  • Activate the Grand Commendation as early as possible — the sooner it's working, the fewer real days you'll spend.
  • Plant items on the farm that are useful to you in parallel: Bag of Songbells Seeds give herbs and ore, while healing vegetables can be used for cooking toward Master of the Ways.
  • If you have several characters on the account — the Grand Commendation applies to all of them, so it's worth maxing it on one first, then grinding reputation wherever it's fastest.
  • Plan the purchase: 1500 gold is a symbolic sum at level 80, but before flying to Halfhill make sure you have it on the active character.

Tips

1

Don't forget that Gina also sells the ability_mount_goatmountwhiteReins of the White Riding Goat and the ability_mount_goatmountbrownReins of the Brown Riding Goat. By collecting all three, you complete the themed goat set in a single trip.

2

Tillers reputation grants more than just mounts: it's achievements, your own house, unique cooking recipes, and pets. Treat the grind as a mini-homestead, not a chore.

3

If you're chasing mount collector achievements, head into Pandaria on several old characters at once — they all have their own farms, and you'll speed up reputation through parallel planting.

4

Save colorful stones and other gifts in advance: the early friendship levels speed up sharply if you don't waste time hunting for gifts every day.

5

At level 90 the monsters of the Valley of the Four Winds pose no threat, but the quest objectives stay the same — read the quest text, some items are collected through interaction rather than killing.

6

The mount is ground-based and can't fly, so use it more as a decorative one: for real travel across Azeroth, keep a flyer handy.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
