Tuft of Yak Fur

Tuft of Yak Fur is an unusual mount item added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion. Unlike classic mounts, it is not added to your collection through the journal but works as a consumable with three charges: when used, it summons a huge enraged yak that charges forward at 400% speed for roughly 18–20 seconds. You cannot stop the yak mid-run — only by canceling the effect manually.

The item remains popular even in TWW S2 (patch 11.1, 2026) because it is the fastest ground mount in the game: it outpaces even dynamic flight on flat routes. Players hunt it not so much for the collection as for the convenience of getting around the old zones of Pandaria, Draenor, the Broken Isles, Argus, and Kul Tiras and Zandalar.

• 400% speed: it is the fastest ground mount in the game over short distances — almost twice as fast as a regular flying mount.
• Versatile consumable: three charges per item, and the item itself farms in just a few minutes.
• Stacks: since the June 2024 hotfix the tuft of fur is no longer unique, so you can keep a stack in your bag.
• Works in many old zones: all of Pandaria, Draenor, the Broken Isles, Argus, as well as the Battle for Azeroth zones.
• Helps with achievements and daily quests: ideal for routes through rare mobs, chests, and Timewalking quests.

If you like to zip quickly across old locations, a stash of tufts of yak fur will save you dozens of minutes a week.

• Character level: minimum 10, but for comfortable solo farming any character 70+ is enough. At level 80 in TWW the target dies in 2–3 hits.
• Riding skill: not required — the fur works as an item, not as a mount from the collection.
• Expansion: access to Pandaria (all modern accounts have it).
• Binding: the item binds on pickup, you cannot sell or trade it.
• Reputation and achievements: not required.

How to reach the Dread Wastes

1. Open the command table or use the portal in Orgrimmar/Stormwind to Pandaria (via the Vale of Eternal Blossoms).
2. From the Vale of Eternal Blossoms fly southeast through Townlong Steppes into the Dread Wastes.
3. Alternative: a monk's teleport to the Temple of the White Tiger, then fly south.

1. Fly into the Dread Wastes and head to the spot ~52, 72 — this is the Mazu's Overlook rise in the south of the zone, near a herd of peaceful yaks.
2. Find Pengsong. He is a huge yak, noticeably larger than the surrounding kin. If he is not there, it means someone has already killed him — wait 10–20 minutes or check the timers on a rare tracker addon.
3. Clear the surroundings. Ordinary yaks graze nearby: kill the 2–3 closest ones so you do not pick up extra enemies during the fight.
4. Kill Pengsong. At level 80 in TWW he dies in literally a couple of rotations. He uses "Charge" and "Lightning Rod", but the damage is negligible. Do not stand in a line with other yaks so the lightning does not hit extra targets.
5. Pick up the Tuft of Yak Fur. The drop is practically guaranteed.
6. Use the item: you will get a button with three charges. On activation an enraged yak is summoned and charges forward — steer the direction with your mouse, and you can stop it only by removing the buff with a right click on the icon.
7. Repeat the farm after respawn if you want to build up a stash (the item stacks).

• Use rare trackers: addons like Rare Scanner or Silver Dragon will tell you the respawn of Pengsong and nearby rares that you can kill along the way.
• Make a loop around the Dread Wastes: while Pengsong is on respawn, go around the zone's other rares — many give toys, pets, and Pandaria currency.
• Farm in a group of 2 characters: set up a second account or join someone else's group. Each member gets their own loot, which doubles the fur output per kill cycle.
• Collect yaks on the Timeless Isle in parallel: while flying through Pandaria, shoot down ordinary yaks — they sometimes drop the fur, though the chance is low.
• Do not waste charges: each charge lasts less than 20 seconds, so use the item only on flat, long routes where 400% speed actually pays off.
• Keep a stack: since the 2024 hotfix the item stacks up to 999, so after farming you can forget about movement speed in the old zones.
