Soaring Skyterror

Overview

Soaring Skyterror is an epic flying rylak mount with a chromatic color scheme, added in patch 6.2 "Fury of Hellfire." The mount is granted to every character on the account after earning the meta-achievement Draenor Pathfinder.

This is one of the few Draenor mounts that serves as both a ground and a flying mount at the same time: the gliding, hovering flight animation makes it visually unique. It requires Apprentice riding skill (a minimum of 80 silver), and the actual speed depends on your flying skills.

Why Get It

  • Collection: it counts toward the progress of the "How Do You Do It?" achievement and its successors.
  • Versatility: a single mount for both ground and air.
  • Status: a calling card of players who have completed all of Draenor — the meta-achievement has been remembered since the days of Warlords of Draenor.
  • Relevance: since patch 9.0.1, flying in Draenor is open to everyone, but the mount itself is still awarded only for "Draenor Pathfinder" — with no shortcut.
  • Free: no tokens or loot boxes, only in-game activity.

Requirements

  • Character level: 90. Draenor content scales and can be cleared solo in one hit.
  • Access to Draenor: the Garrison quest chain from Orgrimmar or Stormwind.
  • Riding: Apprentice (for the mount itself).
  • Warlords of Draenor expansion: included in the base subscription, no separate purchase needed.
  • Time: 2 to 4 weeks of daily play due to the reputation cap of 1500 per day.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1. Open the Garrison and unlock access to Tanaan

If you have never been to Draenor, pick up the starting quest from the herald in Orgrimmar or Stormwind. Complete the Garrison intro chain (about 30-40 minutes) and build the basic level of your headquarters. Then complete the introductory tasks in the Tanaan Jungle to unlock the faction map.

Step 2. "Draenor Explorer"

Explore the 6 zones of Draenor: Shadowmoon Valley, Nagrand, Gorgrond, Talador, Spires of Arak, and Frostfire Ridge (for the Horde) or Shadowmoon Valley (for the Alliance). Simply revealing the map is enough — the achievement can be completed in one evening on a flying mount from any other expansion.

Step 3. "Loremaster of Draenor"

Complete the story achievements of five zones:

  • "Taladored" / "The Talador Campaign."
  • "Hero of Nagrand."
  • "Welcome to the Jungle."
  • "Secrets of the Arakkoa."
  • Faction-specific: "Defender of Stormshield" or "Frostfire Ridge."

Each chain takes 2-4 hours. At level 90 monsters die in one hit; the main thing is to follow the main storyline at the "!" marker with the red icon.

Step 4. "Master Treasure Hunter"

Find 100 treasures in Draenor (excluding the Tanaan Jungle). The recommended addon is HandyNotes: Draenor Treasures. Treasures are visible to all of your characters, and progress is shared account-wide. The optimal route: Nagrand (lots of easy chests by the water) → Talador → Gorgrond.

Step 5. "Guardian of Draenor"

Complete one "bonus objective" in each of the 6 main zones. These are large areas with a gold marker on the map; it is enough to deal damage to a single mob within the area to get the checkmark.

Step 6. "Tanaan Diplomat" — the longest stage

Reach Revered reputation with three Tanaan Jungle factions:

  • Hand of the Prophet (Alliance) / Vol'jin's Headhunters (Horde) — reputation from daily quests at the main camp.
  • Order of the Awakened — the daily quest "Unseen Influence": gather 10 tainted apexis fragments from rare mobs and treasures, which grants 1500 reputation.
  • The Saberstalkers — killing rylaks and gathering "blood spots" in the Lurking Thicket.

The reputation cap is 1500 per day per faction, so the minimum timeframe is ~14 days with perfect play, usually 3-4 weeks.

Step 7. Obtaining the mount

After closing the fifth subtask, the meta-achievement "Draenor Pathfinder" is counted automatically. A letter from the "Garrison Courier" with the "Soaring Skyterror" item arrives in the mailbox of all your characters. Use it to permanently add the mount to your collection.

Optimization

  • Parallelism: on the very first day, head straight into the Tanaan Jungle and pick up the daily reputation quests — the days count from the first visit, not the last.
  • Legion Medallions: dropped from Tanaan's rare mobs and grant +1000 reputation to a chosen faction. Stockpile and use them up to the 1500 cap.
  • Apexis Crystals: a currency from rare mobs; spend them on reputation buffs at the camp.
  • War Guild: the +10% reputation buff from a guild achievement speeds up the farm.
  • HandyNotes + TomTom: this addon combo shows all treasures and rare mobs right on the map.
  • Group Finder: use the built-in "Group Finder" (the "Miscellaneous" tab) — Tanaan's rare mobs respawn in public groups every 15-20 minutes.
  • Garrison missions: send your followers on missions that grant "Eldritch Horrors" — they reward you with reputation medallions.

Tips

1

At level 90, it is recommended to turn off difficulty scaling in the settings: Draenor is easy as it is, but with lower HP mobs fall faster.

2

"Revered" is needed with only one of the paired factions for your side — do not try to farm Alliance reputation as the Horde.

3

If you completed some of the achievements several years ago, check the progress log: most subtasks are saved from WoD, even after a realm or race change.

4

The meta-achievement and the mount are the same for the Alliance and the Horde; there is no need to switch sides to obtain it.

5

After getting the mount, we recommend immediately closing out "Tanaan Diplomat" hunting for additional rare crews and toys along the way.
