Overview

Great Northern Elderhorn

The Great Northern Elderhorn is a majestic moose from the foothills of Highmountain. The mount was added in patch 7.0.3 with the launch of the Legion expansion and still remains one of the most distinctive ground companions for collectors. The item binds when picked up, but once learned the mount unlocks for every character on the account, making it a great addition to your collection at the current level 90.

Why You Want This Mount

The Great Northern Elderhorn is one of the few mounts in the game obtained exclusively through a profession, and its appearance stands out noticeably among standard riding animals. The mount increases your collection count, contributes to achievements for the number of mounts owned, and serves as a great reminder of the Legion storyline. Obtaining it is tied to an atmospheric chase quest that differs greatly from standard quests and is valued by players for its unique gameplay. If you are already leveling Leatherworking, this mount is a logical goal to craft yourself without relying on a drop chance.

Requirements

Obtaining the mount requires meeting a number of conditions, related first and foremost to the Legion-era Leatherworking profession.

  • A character of at least level 45 (the current level 80 is recommended for a comfortable run).
  • Legion Leatherworking learned, with a skill of at least 100 (800 in the old system).
  • Access to the Broken Isles and the Broken Isles Dalaran.
  • The riding skill (apprentice riding) to use the mount.
  • The base Legion Leatherworking quest chain completed, including the preceding profession quests.

Step-by-Step Guide

Below is a sequential plan for obtaining the mount, from preparation to crafting.

  1. Level your Leatherworker character to Legion skill 100. If you have just returned to the game, use the accelerated profession-leveling mechanics at the current level 80.
  2. Complete the base Legion Leatherworking quest chain in the Broken Isles Dalaran, starting with the welcome quests from Namha Moonwater.
  3. Reach the quest Mounting Made Easy — it is offered after the previous stages of the profession chain.
  4. Buy or craft a Stonehide Leather Barding in advance — it prevents you from being dazed off the mount during the chase.
  5. Prepare food that restores health after a fall, such as Fighter Chow — at one point in the zone you will leap off a waterfall.
  6. Head to Stormheim and find the starting point of the chase after the Great Northern Elderhorn, marked in the quest.
  7. Use the magic lasso you are given and follow the elderhorn, keeping a minimal distance so the rope does not snap.
  8. Pass the chase checkpoints — if the rope breaks, you resume from the nearest checkpoint rather than from the start.
  9. Lead the elderhorn to the final point and complete the quest with Namha Moonwater, receiving a pattern as a reward.
  10. Learn the pattern on your Leatherworker, gather the materials, and craft the Elderhorn Riding Harness.
  11. Use the crafted item — the Great Northern Elderhorn mount will appear in your mount journal and become available to every character on the account.

Optimizing the Run

A few tricks will help you complete the chase faster and with fewer attempts.

  • Put on the Stonehide Leather Barding ahead of time: without it, any hit from mobs along the way will knock you off the mount and break the link with the elderhorn.
  • Keep several portions of restorative food in your bags — the fall from the waterfall deals serious damage, and retrying after dying throws you back to the nearest checkpoint.
  • Set up convenient hotkeys for the mount and food: the chase runs without stops, and every second spent in the bag menu works against you.
  • Use profession abilities and racial traits that reduce fall damage, if you have any.
  • Run the quest at the current level 80 — thanks to scaling, the Stormheim mobs are now noticeably weaker than in the original Legion.

Tips and Useful Details

A few recommendations that will make the whole process of collecting the mount easier.

  • Stock up on all the crafting materials in advance: Stonehide Leather and Blood of Sargeras are still sold at the auction house, while Felhide can be obtained by tanning ordinary hides at the appropriate workbench.
  • If you do not yet have Legion Leatherworking, keep in mind that leveling it is a separate project, so plan to obtain the mount together with the overall leveling of the profession.
  • Before starting the chase, disable automatic loot collection and unnecessary add-ons so that random pop-up windows do not interfere with control.
  • The mount pairs perfectly with themed transmogs in the style of Highmountain and Stormheim, especially if you collect the Legion armor sets of the Pantheon.
  • After completing the quest for the pattern, save the materials for the future: a Legion Leatherworker can also create other useful items, including bardings and bags.
