WoW Forever Shadow Priest — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Ranged, damage. Shadow in Forever leans harder into your own sustained damage, damage-over-time pressure, and crit scaling. Spells have become noticeably cheaper, but target survivability, holding the channel, and the need to drop out of the form to heal remain a real cost.
The biggest change is that Shadow Weaving now empowers you instead of marking the target for the whole group.
Class Changes
Shadowform reshapes your gearing
In classic, Shadow kept up
Shadow Word: Pain and Shadow Weaving, cast
Mind Blast, and filled the gaps with
Mind Flay. In long fights mana ran dry, and you had to downrank or finish with a wand.
Classic
Shadowform granted 15% Shadow damage and 15% reduced physical damage taken. In Forever it is 10% damage, the same physical damage reduction, half the cost on Shadow spells, and +100% to their critical damage bonus.
So the smaller flat bonus was traded for a substantially cheaper continuous playstyle and stronger crits. The crit modifier applies specifically to the bonus portion of a critical strike.
There is also a change in restrictions: the classic form barred Holy school spells, while in Forever the ban is placed on healing spells. You will have to drop the form for emergency healing, and those heals together with re-entering the form must be budgeted separately from the mana you save on damage.
Damage over time and dying targets
Improved Shadow Word: Pain extends
Shadow Word: Pain, cutting down refresh work on durable targets. The increased critical damage bonus from
Shadowform now carries over to periodic crits as well, not just direct spells — which means the uptime of
Shadow Word: Pain has become part of the payoff from crit gear.
The practical takeaway is simple: keep useful ticks running while you channel
Mind Flay or move, instead of refreshing the effect early just to fill a gap. And let the target's remaining health decide where to spend mana: a fresh long damage-over-time effect on a dying enemy trades immediate damage for ticks that will never land.
Improved Devouring Plague reduces the cost of Devouring Plague and spreads it when a target carrying the effect dies, transferring only the remaining duration. The first rank cuts the cost by 25% and jumps within five yards, the second by 50% and within ten. It is worth applying to an enemy that will die next to your following victim with a useful chunk of duration left.
Shadow Affinity separately increases the crit chance of Shadow Word: Death against targets at 20% health or below.
Your own damage instead of a target debuff
Shadow Weaving now increases the Shadow damage you deal, stacking up to five times. In classic the talent applied Shadow Vulnerability to the enemy, increasing the Shadow damage it took — and this way it buffed warlocks in the raid. In Forever the benefit moved onto your own damage.
Vampiric Embrace heals party members for 20% of your Shadow damage over 30 seconds and gives
Spirit Tap a chance to trigger when marked enemies die. This makes it useful on an assigned target even when someone else lands the finishing blow.
A caveat: group healing helps against constant minor damage, but it is not full raid coverage and not a replacement for a healer responding to a burst on a specific player.

Talent Overview
The Shadow tree holds 49 points on a budget of 51. It is taken in full, and the two free points go into Force of Will from Discipline.
This is not a ready leveling build. It is only an example distribution of abilities for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
Shadow is a caster tree, so weapons are judged by Shadow spell power, intellect, and spirit. The weapon's own damage does not matter.
Critical strike chance in Forever is more valuable for this tree than in classic:
Shadowform doubles the bonus portion of critical damage, and this works on periodic effects like
Shadow Word: Pain as well. Previously crit mainly helped direct spells.
Spirit should be judged soberly:
Spiritual Guidance from the Holy tree converts it into spell power only up to 8% versus 25% in classic. For Shadow this means items with spirit are no longer as clearly good as before.
Intellect works through
Force of Will from Discipline, but with spells half as cheap under the form the mana problem is noticeably less pressing than in classic. A wand is needed less often in this tree: finishing a target with it to save mana is almost never required anymore.
