WoW Forever Assassination Rogue — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Melee combat and poison pressure. Assassination in Forever combines dual-wield damage, poison upkeep, and finisher management. Stay on a poisoned target and keep energy banked for the next move — that is the core rhythm of the tree.
In Classic the tree had neither its own combo-point generator nor a way to sustain poison strength. Forever adds both.
Class Changes
Mutilate and the Poisoned Target
Mutilate strikes with both hands for 75% weapon damage plus 13 from each hand, deals 20% more against poisoned targets, and awards two combo points for 60 energy.
It is important to separate two things: applying poison to your weapon and having a poison effect on the enemy. Instant Poison deals damage immediately and leaves no lasting effect of its own, so it does not enable the 20% bonus.
Both hands contribute direct damage, so the offhand is no longer just a place to hold poison.
Lethality explicitly lists Mutilate among the abilities it buffs, while
Seal Fate grants combo points on critical strikes from generators.
A practical note: watch your actual combo-point count before pressing an expensive generator. Repeating it at a nearly full bar means losing the benefit of a lucky crit.
Poison as a Maintained Effect
Envenom spends combo points not on one-time damage but on a buff: plus 30% to poison damage and plus 10% to poison application chance. Its duration scales with combo points — from nine seconds at one to 21 seconds at five, costing 25 energy.
This is not a finisher in the usual sense: it improves what you do next. That means its value depends on how long the target lives and how much time you spend in melee on it.
Improved Slice and Dice extends
Slice and Dice, and this is where a real choice appears: the tree now has two maintained effects rather than a single move you can press forever. Before repositioning or a phase change, compare the remaining useful time on the buff against an immediate finisher. And on a durable target, do not let both effects expire at once — otherwise you will have to rebuild them with no energy.
Poisons and Resource Return
Malice directly raises the crit chance of both attacks and poisons.
Vile Poisons boosts poison damage and its resistance to being removed, while
Improved Poisons raises application chance and gives a chance not to consume a charge. Saving charges extends the applied poison, but you still need to check remaining duration and charges between pulls.
Relentless Strikes keeps its classic 20% chance per combo point to return 25 energy, and
Ruthlessness can still add a combo point after a finisher. Together they make each following cycle different, so watch energy and combo points after spending rather than queuing attacks blindly.
Core Ability Descriptions
Mutilate
Mutilate is the tree's main generator: two combo points for 60 energy, a strike with both hands, and a 20% bonus against a poisoned target.
Envenom
Envenom is a maintained buff of 30% to poison damage and 10% to application chance. Its duration depends on the combo points spent.
Slice and Dice and Finishers
Slice and Dice with
Improved Slice and Dice speeds up attacks,
Eviscerate delivers burst damage,
Rupture applies a bleed, and
Kidney Shot stuns.
Expose Armor lowers the target's armor.
Cold Blood
Cold Blood makes your next ability a guaranteed crit — with
Seal Fate that also means extra combo points.
Opening the Fight
Stealth and
Ambush remain the standard opener,
Garrote applies a bleed from stealth, and
Cheap Shot stuns.
Control and Survival
Kick interrupts,
Gouge and
Blind take a target out of the fight,
Sap removes an enemy before combat,
Evasion and
Vanish cover dangerous moments, and
Sprint closes or opens distance.
Talents Overview
The Assassination tree holds 48 points against a budget of 51. It is taken in full, and the three spare points go into the first tier of Combat:
Sinister Strike is boosted with two points through Improved Sinister Strike, and one more goes into
Eviscerate.
This is not a finished leveling build. It is only an example of point distribution for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
Assassination requires two daggers. Mutilate is calculated directly from the damage of both hands, so the offhand is no longer just a slot for poison — its damage feeds into the calculation directly.
Fast daggers are preferable to slow ones: more swings mean more poison procs and more crit chances under
Seal Fate. At the same time Mutilate scales from weapon damage, so a very weak offhand dagger noticeably cuts the ability's damage.
Among stats the priority is agility and crit:
Malice raises the crit of both attacks and poisons,
Seal Fate turns crits into combo points, and
Lethality raises the crit damage of generators. Hit in Forever is convenient because the same bonus helps both weapons and poisons.
A separate note on poisons:
Improved Poisons gives a chance not to consume a charge, so an applied coating lasts longer, but you still have to check remaining charges between pulls.
