Overview

Prodigious Gene Splicer

Game icon Prodigious Gene Splicer is an epic one-handed dagger from The War Within expansion. The item appeared in the Manaforge Omega raid alongside update 11.2 — the final major content drop of the expansion, set on the shattered planet of K'aresh.

The blade is built around an ethereal aesthetic: a thin, segmented edge on a bionic mount, glowing purple-green capsules running along the hilt, and a dark metal wrapping shot through with violet flares. The silhouette directly references the manaforge's laboratories, where artificial creatures were bred from arcane energy, and the strands of magical web that thread through the entire raid.

Beyond its looks, the dagger also works as a fully functional combat weapon: it carries Agility, Mastery, and Versatility, so during its season it was eagerly worn by Rogues and other specs that need daggers. Today the item is valued first and foremost as a transmog — the contrasting glow reads well both in stealth and during the active animations of finishing strikes.

Source

The dagger drops from Loom'ithar — the second boss of the Manaforge Omega raid. This is a colossal arcane weaver-spider bred deep within the complex to produce "living silk": over the course of the fight, web strands constantly grow around the arena, and the group has to burn them away to avoid being trapped.

Key loot details:

  • Loom'ithar is the second of the raid's eight Manaforge Omega bosses.
  • The chance to get this specific dagger is high: according to Wowhead, the item drops in roughly a third of cases, which is very generous for a raid weapon.
  • The boss is available on Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulties, as well as in the lighter Story mode.
  • The standard weekly lockout applies: each difficulty of the boss can be killed once per week, and each difficulty counts separately.
  • The dagger is bound on pickup and cannot be handed to another player.
  • There is no separate guaranteed reward — the blade sits in Loom'ithar's general loot table.

The item level depends on the chosen difficulty: the higher the mode, the higher the stats on the dropped dagger. For transmog this is irrelevant — the appearance is identical across all difficulties, so the most accessible mode is enough to obtain the look.

How to enter the raid

The entrance to Manaforge Omega is located on the planet K'aresh, in the upper part of the zone next to the "Twilight Bluff" flight point. The most convenient approach is to fly straight there — it's only a few steps from the flight point to the raid gates. Entrance coordinates:

/way #2339 42.19 21.73 Manaforge Omega — entrance

Simply walking up to the gates isn't enough. To cross the complex's protective barrier, your character must be wearing the artifact cloak Game iconReshanor's Bindings. The cloak grants the "Phase Dive" ability, which turns the hero into pure energy and carries them through the manaforge's filtration systems — this is the only way to get inside the raid.

The cloak is awarded over the course of the 11.2 update's story campaign: you receive it in the third chapter, and until that point the raid entrance is locked on every difficulty. So before heading out for the dagger, you must complete the update's campaign at least once — after that the cloak stays on your account forever.

What's important to know about the fight

Detailed tactics are the subject of a separate raid guide. To farm the appearance it's enough to keep three things in mind:

  • Tether strands stretch from the boss to selected players: you break them by running out to the outer edge of the arena, so the "living silk" pools don't stack on the group's main spot.
  • Additional enemies crawl from the arena walls and tighten the web ring: you burn one of them down to leave the group a path.
  • At 50% health the second phase begins — the boss lands and takes increased damage, while the tank has to slowly walk it along the wall, clearing space away from the spawning dangerous zones.

On Raid Finder and in Story mode these mechanics forgive almost any mistake, which makes them the optimal choice for relaxed weekly farming for transmog.

Alternatives

The Prodigious Gene Splicer has no color recolors — its appearance is unique. But the Manaforge Omega raid offers another dagger in the same ethereal aesthetic, and a similar silhouette can be put together outside the raid as well:

Dagger Source Appearance Feature
Game iconProdigious Gene Splicer Loom'ithar, Manaforge Omega raid Segmented blade, violet capsules along the hilt
Game iconVoidglass Kris Fractillus, Manaforge Omega raid Paired ethereal dagger from the same series, different blade layout
Game iconMagister's Ritual Knife Elven-style dagger outside the raid Close in size, but without ethereal inlays — for a look without a glow

If you specifically want the "technological" ethereal look, both Manaforge Omega raid daggers pair well together. If the ethereal aesthetic isn't your thing, the Game iconMagister's Ritual Knife provides a neutral blade of a similar silhouette without the glow.

Who It Suits Visually

The violet glow and thin, segmented blade pair easily with dark "techno-magical" sets. A few reliable combinations:

  • Rogue leather sets from The War Within raids — the dagger organically continues their cold palette.
  • K'aresh ethereal gear: belt, shoulders, and bracers with the same violet inlays as the capsules on the hilt.
  • Dark Void-themed sets — obsidian colors, a black cloak, violet accent details.
  • A contrasting option — light mail or leather armor in warm tones: the bright violet dagger works as an accent against a calm background.
  • Paired daggers for a Rogue — the model looks equally good in the main and off hand, and two copies create a cohesive stage look.

Tips

1

Enter the raid at least once a week on every suitable difficulty: the weekly lockout counts separately for each mode, so over a week you can get several chances at the drop.

2

Don't skip the Great Vault — even if the dagger didn't drop from the boss itself, it can come from the weekly reward if Manaforge Omega bosses are listed among its rows.

3

For farming on alts, Story mode works well: Loom'ithar is cleared there as simply as possible and also grants the appearance if the item drops.

4

Before every run, put on Reshanor's Bindings and check that the "Phase Dive" ability is available — without the active cloak you won't reach the boss.

5

Don't mix up the series: the Manaforge Omega ethereal daggers don't unlock the appearance from ordinary ethereal models in the open world — this look is tied specifically to the raid source.

6

After getting the item, equip the dagger once so the appearance is guaranteed to be added to your appearance collection and becomes available to all characters on the account.

7

On difficulties above Raid Finder, loot is distributed among all participants, and the dagger you need may drop for someone else — you can't hand it over afterward, so go regularly.

8

If you're farming the appearance on purpose, choose a spec that uses daggers and Agility stats: that way the dropped item is more likely to suit your character and go straight into use.
