Swift Gray Ram

Overview

Swift Gray Ram is an epic racial ground mount of the Alliance dwarves, added back in the classic version of World of Warcraft. A massive gray ram with thick fur and powerful curled horns, a loyal companion of the people of Ironforge. It is the model of one of the most recognizable mounts in the game: these are the very rams you see on the streets of Ironforge and in every dwarven settlement.

Unlike many legendary mounts, this is not a rare drop — the mount is sold freely by a vendor for gold. The main difficulty is that only dwarves, or members of other Alliance races who have reached Exalted with the Ironforge faction, can buy it. So for most players this guide is, first and foremost, the path to that reputation.

Why you want this mount

  • Maximum ground speed — the mount grants +100% to ground movement speed, meaning it moves just as fast as any other epic ground steed
  • One of the early dwarven racial mounts — a classic model that remains iconic and looks great in transmog screenshots and roleplay stories
  • Part of the racial ram collection — alongside it, Veron Amberstill sells two more epic rams of a similar model. With Exalted reputation with Ironforge you can buy them all at once and complete the collector achievements
  • Contribution to achievements — the purchase counts toward the overall mount collector achievements, which in turn lead to exclusive rewards
  • Account-wide access — after the first purchase the mount appears in the collection of all your Alliance characters
  • No rare drops required — it all comes down to 10 gold and reputation, no RNG luck

How to reach Veron Amberstill

The vendor is located at Amberstill Ranch — a small ranch east of Ironforge, in the Dun Morogh zone. The fastest way is to teleport to Ironforge and fly there on a flying mount, or walk east on foot.

  1. Open a portal to Ironforge from any major Alliance city. In Stormwind the portals to the capitals are in Stormwind Keep; in Boralus they are in the square next to the harbor zone
  2. Leave Ironforge through the eastern gate and travel along the road toward Dun Morogh
  3. Amberstill Ranch is located in the eastern part of Dun Morogh. The vendor's coordinates:
/way Dun Morogh 70.4 49.0 Veron Amberstill — ram breeder
  1. At the ranch you will see a pen with rams and Veron himself standing next to an old wagon. Open his dialog — if you meet the required conditions, all the epic rams, including the Swift Gray Ram, will appear in the vendor window

If your character is a dwarf, the goods list will be shown right away. If you play another Alliance race and do not have Exalted with Ironforge, Veron will bluntly say that he will not entrust the reins to an unproven ally and will not trade with you.

How to get Exalted with Ironforge

If you play a human, night elf, draenei, worgen, pandaren, void elf, lightforged draenei, or any other Alliance race besides a dwarf, you need to raise your reputation with Ironforge to Exalted. Below are the most efficient methods in the current patch.

The diplomat bonus for humans

  • The human racial trait Diplomacy grants +10% to reputation gained with all factions. If you have a human character, use that one — it will speed up the farm

The Ironforge tabard

The most reliable way to raise reputation is to equip the Ironforge Tabard. It is bought from Captain Stonehelm in Ironforge for a few silver coins.

  • While the tabard is worn, any enemy killed in classic dungeons and heroic dungeons grants Ironforge reputation
  • The fastest option is solo runs through old dungeons from Cataclysm and earlier expansions. Starting at level 90, all these dungeons can be cleared solo in a few minutes

Dun Morogh and Ironforge story quests

  • Complete the starting dwarven quest chains in Dun Morogh, Loch Modan and the Wetlands. Many of them give 250–500 reputation each and together raise you to Friendly or Honored with no extra effort
  • Quests from older expansions related to Ironforge also count toward the total

Optimal route for farming reputation

  1. Create or switch to a level 90 character
  2. Buy the Ironforge Tabard in Ironforge and equip it
  3. Clear classic dungeons solo (Dire Maul, Zul'Farrak, Stratholme) in 5–10 minutes per run
  4. In parallel, finish quests in the dwarven zones — they close out the early reputation levels for free
  5. Once you reach Exalted, head to Veron Amberstill and buy the mount

In players' experience, a full farm from Neutral to Exalted takes 8–15 hours of pure time depending on the chosen route and bonuses. With the human Diplomacy and scrolls, this time is reduced by about a third.

Tips

1

Buy all three rams at once — if you have already reached Exalted, spend another 20 gold. They count separately toward the mount collection and lead to collector achievements

2

Don't forget the regular colors — if you collect everything, Veron also sells basic rams for 1 gold. They use the same model but count as separate mounts

3

Don't waste your money — if you don't play Alliance, buying this ram is impossible. The mount is hard-bound to the faction; transferring it across the account does not work

4

Check your reputation progress in advance — sometimes characters who played a lot in old expansions already have Exalted with Ironforge and simply don't know it. Open the «Reputation» tab and find Ironforge

5

The optimal class for farming dungeons under the tabard — Demon Hunter and Retribution Paladin. The first offers the highest mobility and quickly gathers mobs into packs, the second efficiently clears them with mass strikes

6

A discount on the mount's price — at high reputation levels with Ironforge the price drops. At Exalted the final cost falls from 10 to about 8 gold, which is nice but does not affect the overall calculation
