WoW Forever Destruction Warlock — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Ranged, spell damage. Destruction is built around
Immolate: it empowers Incinerate and unlocks
Conflagrate. Shadow and Flame ties the two schools together, while Devastation's Doom gives you a second target on fights with two enemies. One key detail: the rank of Shadow and Flame decides whether
Conflagrate consumes your
Immolate, so the same sequence does not fit every build.
Class Changes
Immolate is both damage and setup
Incinerate deals 25% more damage to a target affected by
Immolate.
Conflagrate requires
Immolate and, without Shadow and Flame, consumes it. This preserves the classic trade-off between instant damage and the remaining ticks — but along with the ticks goes the condition that empowers Incinerate.
Shadow and Flame changes this trade-off by rank: at rank 1,
Conflagrate has a 20% chance to preserve
Immolate; at rank 4, 80%; at rank 5, 100%. Below rank 5, check whether
Immolate survived before reapplying it. At rank 5,
Conflagrate leaves the effect untouched, and you no longer need to restore the condition for Incinerate after every use.
Since
Immolate ticks can crit, spending the effect early gives up both their damage and their chance to crit. At low ranks of Shadow and Flame, a dying or soon-to-be-unavailable target is exactly the case where the remaining ticks are worth trading for the instant damage of
Conflagrate.
Aftermath also raises the initial damage of
Immolate and gives
Conflagrate a chance to stun, which is useful against short-lived and fleeing enemies.
Switch between schools when it pays off
Shadow and Flame makes
Conflagrate raise your Shadow damage for 20 seconds, and
Shadowburn your Fire damage for the same 20 seconds. The bonus is 2% at rank 1, 8% at rank 4 and 10% at rank 5.
Shadowburn also has a 20%, 80% or 100% chance, respectively, to immediately return a soul shard. Direction matters: a Fire hit helps Shadow, a Shadow hit helps Fire.
Cast an off-school spell when its own damage together with the follow-up boost justifies the cast, the mana and the shard. The bonuses refer to all Shadow or Fire damage, not just direct spells — so a hybrid build with Affliction cannot be evaluated as if periodic damage were excluded.
Shadowburn delivers instant damage and a shard refund if a significant target dies within eight seconds: it is a reward for finishing a target or casting while moving, not a spell to waste on the wrong target.
Improved Shadow Bolt makes your critical
Shadow Bolt raise the Shadow damage the target takes from your attacks for 12 seconds. In classic, the effect boosted Shadow damage to the target in general and fell off after four non-periodic damage sources or after 12 seconds. In Forever the vulnerability became personal, and the four-hit condition was removed. The talent still rewards
Shadow Bolt crits, but it no longer provides the former raid-wide bonus.
Devastation's Doom and safe area damage
Devastation's Doom marks one target for five minutes and transfers 15% of the damage you deal to other enemies onto it. There can be only one target, and each enemy holds only one of your dooms at a time. Place the mark on the enemy that should take damage while you strike someone else: there is no point in continuing to hit the marked target itself.
The marked target is meanwhile denied your second doom. On a single boss there is simply nowhere to copy damage from. On a two-target fight, count not only the total damage but also priority: transferring damage into an enemy the group should stop hitting is a bad idea. And note that the effect refers to your damage: pet damage is not included in it.
Pyroclasm gives
Rain of Fire and
Hellfire a chance to stun for the duration, and
Soul Fire its own stun chance. This is not guaranteed control of a dangerous pack.
Intensity protects Destruction casts and channels from pushback, and
Cataclysm reduces spell cost.
Hellfire damages you as well, so where it is safer to keep your distance use
Rain of Fire, and in any case keep the channel away from crowd-controlled targets.
Descriptions of Core Abilities
Immolate
Immolate is the foundation of the tree: damage over time, the condition for Incinerate, and the requirement for
Conflagrate.
Incinerate
The main direct Fire spell. Against a target under
Immolate it deals 25% more damage, which is why the effect is kept up constantly.
Conflagrate
Conflagrate is a fast strike that requires
Immolate. Whether it consumes the effect depends on the rank of Shadow and Flame. It also raises your Shadow damage for 20 seconds.
Shadowburn
Shadowburn is instant damage for a shard that raises your Fire damage for 20 seconds and can return a shard if the target dies.
Shadow Bolt and Soul Fire
Shadow Bolt remains a direct Shadow spell and, with
Improved Shadow Bolt, applies a personal vulnerability to the target.
Soul Fire is a heavy strike for a shard.
Area Damage
Rain of Fire hits from range,
Hellfire hits around you and on yourself.
Pyroclasm adds a stun chance to both, but you cannot rely on it as control.
Curses and Utility Spells
Curse of the Elements and
Curse of Weakness support the group,
Fear,
Howl of Terror and
Banish cover crowd control,
Life Tap trades health for mana,
Create Healthstone and
Soulstone Resurrection insure the group,
Demon Armor and
Shadow Ward help you survive.
Talents Overview
The Destruction tree holds 50 points on a budget of 51. It is taken in full, and the single free point goes into the first tier of Demonology:
Improved Imp empowers the imp, which remains the standard pet for this build.
This is not a ready leveling build. It is only an example distribution of abilities for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
Weapons are judged by stats. A staff or a one-handed weapon plus off-hand combo are chosen for spell power, crit and intellect.
Crit is one of the main priorities here:
Ruin raises the critical damage bonus itself,
Improved Shadow Bolt turns
Shadow Bolt crits into a vulnerability on the target, and
Immolate ticks can also crit. An item with crit works in several places at once.
Spell power boosts both direct casts and the periodic part of
Immolate. Intellect and
Cataclysm settle the cost question, and soul shards are saved by
Shadowburn on finishing.
The Destruction tree gives no spell hit at all — it has to be made up from gear. A miss costs more than usual here: along with the damage you lose the other school's boost from Shadow and Flame, and the shard-return chance.
