Engineering in Midnight
Engineering lets you craft combat gear, guns, profession tools, weapon enhancements, and useful devices. Recycling crafted reagents is now at the heart of production: it supplies Engineers with materials and helps unlock new recipes.
The profession is useful for personal convenience, Auction House sales, and fulfilling Crafting Orders. Your specialization choice determines which recipes and skill bonuses you unlock first.
Where to Learn Engineering
Learn the profession from Danwe in Silvermoon City. New Engineers must first learn base Engineering, then Midnight Engineering.

What's Changed in Engineering
- Recycling crafted reagents from different Midnight professions has replaced inventing and disassembling prototypes.
- Quality reagents and consumables now have two quality ranks. This does not mean combat gear is also limited to two ranks.
- There are two primary crafted components:
Song Gear and
Soul Sprocket. - In addition to goggles and bracers, Engineers can craft boots for all four armor types.
- Epic profession gear is now available. It grants the same skill as the corresponding Rare item, but more secondary profession stats.
- Open-world devices are represented by separate optional reagents. Some effects only work outdoors or out of combat.
- Artisan Engineer's Moxy is specific to Engineering. It cannot be replaced with another profession's Moxy.
Materials and Recycling
Material | Use | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Basic component | Trainer recipe | |
| Component for more complex crafting | Trainer recipe | |
| Devices, components, and some gear | Recycle suitable basic reagents | |
| Complex recipes, high-quality gear, and tools | Recycle suitable refined reagents |
Mining is convenient if you want to gather ore yourself. Recycling also uses products from other professions, so buying finished reagents from the Auction House is a perfectly viable option.
How Recycling Works
Recycling consumes 5 units of a suitable crafted reagent. The materials you receive and their quality depend on the source material and your skill. First check what the selected reagent yields: any five items are not interchangeable.
10 points in the main Recycling branch unlock the chance to discover recipes while recycling. Each eligible operation has a chance to discover one; a recipe is not guaranteed after every attempt.
At 30 points in the main branch, materials yielded by recycling increase by 100%. This bonus makes production more efficient, but it does not make every operation's result fixed.
Source Reagent | Profession | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Tailoring | ||
| Inscription | ||
| Blacksmithing | ||
| Engineering | ||
| Tailoring | ||

Consider the source reagent's cost. For example,
Arcanoweave Bolt takes more work to craft than
Imbued Bright Linen Bolt, but it does not necessarily yield a more profitable recycling result.
Arcanoweave Lining,
Sunfire Silk Lining,
Blessed Pango Charm,
Devouring Banding, and
Primal Spore Binding are sometimes listed cheaply. Compare them with other sources of
Aetherlume as well. Crafting an expensive reagent specifically to break it down is usually unprofitable.
Compare the cost of five source reagents with the value of the expected result at the same quality. Looking only at the price per item can be misleading if you ignore the material yield.
Stats and Concentration
Stat | What It Does | Where It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting Skill | Helps you reach a higher quality | All eligible quality recipes |
| Resourcefulness | Chance to save some materials | Expensive orders and bulk crafting |
| Multicraft | Chance to craft extra copies | Eligible components and consumables; does not create a second piece of armor or a second tool |
| Ingenuity | Chance to recover some of the Concentration spent | Concentration-based quality increases |
| Concentration | Lets you raise the result's quality when regular skill is not enough | Limited production of high-quality items |
Concentration regenerates over time, so your reserve limits how much you can produce this way. Before accepting an order, check its required quality and Concentration cost. Extra skill from specialization and gear can reduce that cost.
For armor and tools, Crafting Skill and Resourcefulness are usually more valuable, with Ingenuity helping when you spend Concentration. For bulk component production, consider Multicraft. Items without quality ranks cannot be improved with Concentration.
Engineering Gear
An Engineer uses one tool and two accessories. Engineers craft their tool and head accessory; Leatherworkers craft the gloves.
Item | Slot |
|---|---|
| Tool | |
| Head accessory | |
| Gloves |
Item | Slot |
|---|---|
| Tool | |
| Head accessory | |
| Gloves |
Item | Slot |
|---|---|
| Tool | |
| Head accessory | |
| Gloves |
Basic items are easy to buy from the Auction House. Use the Crafting Order system for personal gear. Choose your tool stat to suit your work: Multicraft for eligible consumables, Resourcefulness to save materials, or Ingenuity for Concentration crafting.
Epic gear improves secondary stats. It does not, by itself, grant more skill than the corresponding Rare item.
Engineering Specializations
The first specialization unlocks at skill level 25, followed by the next ones at 50, 60, and 75. You choose the order. You can learn all four trees; fully developing them requires 570 Knowledge Points.
Specialization | Total Points | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Recycling | 90 | General bonuses, recipe discovery, and material yield |
| Market Mobility | 225 | Profession tools and accessories |
| Combat Analytics | 165 | Goggles, bracers, boots, and guns |
| Bits and Bots | 90 | Reagents, gears, and devices |
Recycling

This is the foundation for regularly recycling materials. The tree also contains profession stats that help with other Engineering recipes.
Branch | Maximum Points | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Recycling | 30 | At 10 points, unlocks recipe discovery; at 30, doubles material yield |
| Resourcefulness | 20 | Saves materials |
| Multicraft | 20 | Extra items from eligible recipes |
| Concentrated Effort | 20 | Bonuses to Concentrated Effort |
Maxing the main branch is important if you want a regular supply of materials. Your next choice depends on what you craft: saving reagents helps with gear, while consumable production can also benefit from Multicraft.
Market Mobility

This tree focuses on profession gear. The main branch has 25 points, two intermediate branches have 10 each, and six final branches have 30 each.
Focus | Sub-branches | What It Improves |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory Tools | Engineering Tools, Jewelcrafting Tools, Tailoring Tools | Tools for the corresponding professions |
| Finishing Touches | Engineering Accessories, Mining Accessories, Fishing Rods | Accessories and fishing tools |
The sub-branches unlock recipes and increase skill for the selected gear. First bring one focus to a sought-after quality, then expand your selection.
Fishing rods are in “Finishing Touches,” even though they occupy a tool slot. Keep this in mind when spending Knowledge Points.
Combat Analytics

This tree improves combat gear and guns. The main branch has 25 points, with four sub-branches of 35 points each.
Branch | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Goggles | Headgear for different armor types |
| Bracers | Combat bracers for different armor types |
| Boots | Boots and other footwear for different armor types |
| Guns | Guns, including |
As you invest Knowledge Points, your skill increases and you unlock optional and finishing reagents. For high-quality orders, choose a specific slot first, then develop its sub-branch and the general bonuses.
Goggles require Engineering to wear. Bracers and boots are also available to characters without this profession, provided they meet the item's other requirements.
Bits and Bots

The main branch and both sub-branches each contain 30 points. This focus covers materials, consumables, optional reagents, and devices.
Branch | Main Bonuses |
|---|---|
| Bits and Bots | Crafting Skill for eligible components and devices, plus more opportunities to discover recipes |
| Bits | Reagents and gears, plus bonuses to material yield from recycling |
| Bots | Optional reagents and devices; recipes for |
Bots is especially useful for weapon enhancements. Some items, including
Soulbound Rescue Device,
Kinetic Ankle Igniters,
B1P, Scorcher of Souls, and
B0P, Curator of Booms, benefit from both sub-branches.
Choosing Your First Focus
- Recipes and materials: Start with Recycling, unlock recipe discovery, and work toward doubling material yield.
- Profession gear orders: Choose Market Mobility and focus on one item. Add general bonuses from Recycling.
- Armor or guns: Choose the slot you need in Combat Analytics. Do not spread your first Knowledge Points thinly across every sub-branch.
- Materials and consumables to sell: Develop Bits and Bots, then add suitable Resourcefulness and Multicraft bonuses.
Can You Reset Knowledge?
In update 12.1, a one-time Knowledge reset for each profession became available from Teremis in Silvermoon City. This is not a free way to switch between builds, so use the reset carefully.
Tools and Accessories for Other Professions
Engineers supply gear for Jewelcrafters, Tailors, Miners, fishers, and other Engineers. Basic recipes come from the trainer; Rare recipes unlock in Market Mobility. Lireyndal sells Epic schematics in Silvermoon City for 150 Artisan Engineer's Moxy each.
Item | Profession and Slot |
|---|---|
| Jewelcrafting: tool | |
| Fishing: rod | |
| Mining: head accessory | |
| Mining: bag accessory | |
| Tailoring: tool |

The Mining Helmet is an accessory, not an ore-gathering tool. The bag also occupies a profession accessory slot.
Combat Gear and Weapons
Engineers craft goggles, bracers, and boots for Cloth, Leather, Mail, and Plate. Recipes are split among the trainer, Recycling, specializations, and the PvP schematic vendor.
- Evercore items: basic trainer recipes.
- Quel'dorei items: recipes discovered through recycling; the gear can also be transferred within your Warband.
- Aetherlume items: recipes from Combat Analytics.
- Thalassian Combatant gear: schematics from Mirvedon in Silvermoon City.
Use Crafting Orders to make personal items. Quality, selected optional reagents, and available seasonal upgrades determine the final result. Before crafting or recrafting, agree with the customer on stats, embellishment, and required quality.

Gears and Weapon Enhancements
Gears
These optional reagents let you choose a secondary stat in compatible Engineering recipes. Check that the item has the matching socket: a gear is not intended for any arbitrary piece of equipment.
Item | Stat | Recipe Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mastery | Trainer Danwe, Silvermoon City | |
| Critical Strike | Trainer Danwe, Silvermoon City | |
| Versatility | Trainer Danwe, Silvermoon City | |
| Haste | Trainer Danwe, Silvermoon City |
Item | Effect | Recipe Source |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent ranged weapon enhancement for Critical Strike | Recycling | |
| Permanent ranged weapon enhancement for Mastery | Recycling | |
| Temporary enhancement that adds a poison effect to auto-attacks | Recycling | |
| Temporary enhancement with extra Fire damage | Recycling |
Permanent enhancements and temporary consumables serve different purposes. The temporary effect must be reapplied, and its quality affects the strength of the bonus.
Useful Devices
Item | Effect and Restrictions | Recipe Source |
|---|---|---|
| Resurrects an ally, even in combat, with 35% health and 10% mana. Cast time depends on quality. 10-minute cooldown; cannot be used by characters above level 90. Engineering is not required to use it | Recycling | |
| Returns its owner to life after dying outdoors. Does not work after releasing the spirit or for characters above level 90 | Bits and Bots, Bots branch | |
| Pauses the reduction in duration of nearby party members' Thalassian flasks, vials, and Well Fed effects. It is destroyed if combat starts nearby | Recycling |
Soulbound Rescue Device and
M3DDY serve different purposes. The first item is for reviving an ally; the second is tied to your own death in the open world. Do not rely on the second device as a substitute for a group resurrection in a dungeon.
Item | What It Does | Recipe Source |
|---|---|---|
| Toy that transports you to a random area in Midnight. 30-minute cooldown. Requires Midnight Engineering 1 and character level 78 | Recycling | |
| Places a device for 10 minutes. Cannot be used in combat or indoors; it is not a required combat buff | Recycling | |
| Optional reagent with the listed property “+1 to Gleam” for eligible gear without embellishments. It does not replace useful secondary stats | Recycling |
Optional Reagents and Embellishments
Optional reagents are added when crafting or recrafting compatible gear. For each item, check the allowed equipment type and effect restrictions.
Reagent | Effect | Recipe Source |
|---|---|---|
| Grants invisibility for 4–18 seconds. Works outdoors and cannot be used in combat | Bits and Bots → Bots, 30 points | |
| Launches the owner into the air; landing knocks nearby enemies upward. Only for Engineer boots; works outdoors | Recycling | |
| Returns its owner to life after dying in the open world. Added to eligible gear without embellishments | Bits and Bots → Bots |
These effects should not be judged like ordinary raid or dungeon buffs: their use is limited to the open world.
Reagent | Effect | Recipe Source |
|---|---|---|
| Attacks and healing spells can launch up to 5 charges that deal damage or heal | Recycling | |
| Summons an assistant that deals Fire damage in a cone in front of the owner for 6 seconds | Recycling | |
| For Engineering guns. Attacks can increase a random secondary stat for 15 seconds; when triggered by a Critical Strike, it increases your highest stat |
Choose an embellishment for your character's specialization and content. An effect is not automatically best for every class. When choosing a set, account for the overall limit on embellished items.
Additional Recipes in Update 12.1
In addition to
Spiral Serpent's Eye, useful devices for collecting loot and slowing falls were added.
Item or Enhancement | Purpose | Recipe Source |
|---|---|---|
| Toy that collects loot from corpses within 40 yd. Requires level 78 and Midnight Engineering 1 | ||
| Consumable that slows falling for 2 minutes. Requires level 81 | ||
| Engineering helmet enhancement with a glider; 3-minute cooldown |
How to Earn Knowledge Points
Knowledge Points develop your specializations. This is a separate profession progression system: increasing regular skill does not replace earning Knowledge. One-time sources give you a quick start, while recurring tasks and orders provide most of your ongoing progress.
First Crafts
Crafting a recipe with the corresponding journal marker for the first time grants 1 Knowledge Point. Make each learned recipe at least once if the cost is reasonable. Repeating that recipe does not grant another first-craft bonus.
Unlocking recipes through specializations and recycling increases the number of available first crafts. Before spending expensive reagents, check whether the recipe still has its reward marker.
Renown Book
Beyond the Event Horizon: Engineering grants 10 Knowledge Points. It is sold by Void Researcher Anomander in Voidstorm.
- Requires Renown level 9 with the Singularity.
- Requires Midnight Engineering skill level 25.
- Cost: 75 Artisan Engineer's Moxy and 750 Umbral Malachite.
- The reward is once per character.
NPC Crafting Orders
NPC Crafting Orders appear regularly in the profession interface. Check each order's reward: not every completed order grants Knowledge.
Item | Knowledge | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Reward from eligible NPC Crafting Orders | |
| 1 | Helps catch up on missed Knowledge |
Check the cost of missing materials and Concentration before completing an order. The number of eligible orders changes, so do not count on a fixed number of points as a guaranteed weekly payout.
Weekly Crafting Order Quest
The trainer asks you to complete 3 orders. In return, you receive a
Thalassian Engineer's Logbook worth 1 Knowledge Point.
If the quest does not appear, check the introductory questline Artisans Wanted from Captain Fireblessing in Silvermoon City. Eligible orders include the types supported by the system, such as Personal and NPC orders.
Treasure Items
Midnight zone treasures can contain two weekly items. Collect one of each type.
Item | Knowledge |
|---|---|
| 1 | |
| 1 |
Together, these two items grant 2 Knowledge Points. They are separate from the eight one-time treasures listed below: the weekly items do not each have one permanent coordinate where you can find them. Open available treasures throughout the expansion zones.
Inscription Treatise
Thalassian Treatise on Engineering grants 1 Knowledge Point per week. Midnight Engineering 25 is required to use it.
An Inscriptionist crafts the treatise. Place a Crafting Order for one or have another character in your Warband craft it. The item is Warbound, so you can transfer it between your own characters; buying one from the Auction House will not work.
Darkmoon Faire
During the Darkmoon Faire, complete Talkin' Tanks from Rinling. It involves repairing damaged tanks at the Faire.
The profession quest grants 3 Knowledge Points and 2 skill points. This source is available during the monthly Faire, not as a weekly reward. Knowledge remains useful even at maximum skill.
Catching Up on Missed Weeks
Engineering catch-up Knowledge comes through NPC Crafting Orders with
Spark of Midnight Engineering Knowledge. First complete the regular weekly tasks and collect Knowledge items, then check for additional orders.
The system helps you catch up, but it does not allow unlimited Knowledge beyond the intended progression. One-time treasures and first-craft bonuses cannot be repeated either.
Engineering Treasures
Midnight has 8 one-time Engineering treasures. Each grants 3 Knowledge Points, for a total of 24. You can collect each one once per character. Midnight Engineering must be learned to use these items.
On the maps, each location is marked with a bright green circle. The /way commands use the map listed after the # symbol: do not use city or subzone coordinates on the overall zone map.
1.
Promising Junk
Silvermoon City
Search the marked spot in the city and pick up the Engineering junk.

2.
What to Do When Nothing Works
Silvermoon City
Find the book in the marked part of the city. This is a separate treasure, and you can collect it during the same visit to Silvermoon City.

3.
Guide to Misses and Miscalculations
Eversong Woods
Travel to the marked point and pick up the guide. Use the Eversong Woods map for this command.

4.
Convenient Wrench
Zul'Aman
Look for the wrench in the southern part of the zone, at the point marked on the map.

5.
Disabled Helper Bot
Zul'Aman, Atal'Aman
Use the separate Atal'Aman map for this treasure. These coordinates refer to that map, not the overall Zul'Aman map.

6.
Fast-Conducting Antenna
Harandar
The antenna is on top of the mushroom. Check the elevation: reaching the point at its base is not enough.

7.
Ethereal Storm Wrench
Voidstorm, Slayer's Rise
Open the separate Slayer's Rise map for this treasure and travel to the marked point.

8.
Miniature Transport Boat
Voidstorm, Slayer's Rise
The second treasure in this area is west of the first. Pick up the miniature boat at the marked location.

Engineer's Weekly Plan
- Check NPC Crafting Orders and choose rewards that grant Knowledge. Compare the reagent cost with the value of the order.
- Complete 3 orders for the weekly quest and use the
Thalassian Engineer's Logbook. - Find both weekly items:
Dancing Gear and
Dawn Capacitor. - Use your treatise:
Thalassian Treatise on Engineering. - Spend Knowledge on your chosen focus to reach the desired quality for specific items sooner.
- Craft first copies of new recipes if they still have a first-craft reward.
- Check your Concentration reserve and spend it on items where the quality increase is worth the cost.
Also collect all eight one-time treasures, buy the available Renown book, and visit the Darkmoon Faire. To earn gold, regularly compare material costs, recycling yields, finished-item prices, and Auction House fees: no single recipe stays the most profitable throughout the season.
