Specialization Overview

Tank. Protection in Forever ties survivability and damage together through the shield. Block, dodge, and parry generate rage, while the damage and threat that only function with a shield give you a reason to stay in Defensive Stance instead of treating dual-wielding as the default way to build threat.

This is a notable shift in the specialization's logic: in Classic, a Fury-Protection dual-wield hybrid was a viable way to hold threat. In Forever, giving up your shield costs you not only armor and block, but also direct bonuses to damage and threat.

Class Changes

The Shield Grants Threat, Avoidance Grants Rage

Game iconShield Specialization now grants five rage on a block — up from one in Classic. Defensive Mastery adds a chance to gain five rage on a dodge or parry while a shield is equipped.

Dodging and parrying already enabled Game iconRevenge before, but now they come with a resource return as well. This is felt most strongly when you are actually tanking melee enemies: an off-tank taking no incoming attacks does not get this stream.

Unyielding increases all threat in Game iconDefensive Stance while a shield is equipped, whereas in Classic the talent raised attack threat with no shield requirement. Bastion additionally increases all damage while a shield is equipped.

Game iconImproved Bloodrage and Focused Rage fill the gaps: the former increases rage generation, the latter makes offensive abilities cheaper.

Burst Threat and Pull Control

Game iconShield Slam keeps its Classic role: damage scales with block value, threat is high, plus a 50% chance to dispel one magic effect. Its six-second cooldown makes it a recurring priority on the main target rather than an on-demand dispel at any moment.

Game iconImproved Revenge now increases the damage of Game iconRevenge, so points here are worth investing for steady damage rather than relying on the random stun from the old talent.

Vanguard allows Game iconCharge in Game iconDefensive Stance. This simplifies engaging without a stance swap, but nothing in the talent's text says Game iconCharge starts working in combat. Set your first target, then build threat with the cheaper Game iconSunder Armor and Game iconThunder Clap.

Gear and Cooldowns

Game iconAnticipation adds defense skill, Game iconToughness multiplies armor from items, Vitality increases stamina and strength. These are different parts of tanking: avoiding a dangerous attack outcome, cutting physical damage, having a health buffer for spikes, and preserving your own damage. Block value, meanwhile, directly boosts Game iconShield Slam.

Game iconLast Stand grants a temporary health buffer for 20 seconds on a three-minute cooldown — plan healing for the moment that bonus disappears, rather than counting it as a heal. Game iconImproved Shield Wall shortens the cooldown of Game iconShield Wall rather than extending its duration, which is convenient for reusing it on heavy pulls.

Core Ability Breakdown

Shield Slam

Game iconShield Slam is the main source of burst threat. Damage scales with block value, so the shield's stat affects more than just survivability. Once every six seconds, the ability can also dispel one magic effect from the target.

Revenge

Game iconRevenge becomes available after a dodge, parry, or block. With Game iconImproved Revenge it deals noticeable damage and remains a cheap way to hold threat between more expensive buttons.

Sunder Armor and Thunder Clap

Game iconSunder Armor with Game iconImproved Sunder Armor gets cheaper, Game iconThunder Clap with Game iconImproved Thunder Clap hits harder. This is the main way to spread threat across a group of enemies: gather casters via line of sight and avoid hitting anything held under crowd control.

Defensive Abilities

Game iconShield Block is worth keeping in reserve for heavy pulls: save rage for it rather than spending everything on threat. Game iconShield Wall with Game iconImproved Shield Wall returns more often, Game iconLast Stand covers a spike of incoming damage.

Control

Game iconConcussion Blow and Game iconImproved Shield Bash provide pinpoint control. An interrupted spell or a stunned enemy that reached the healer saves more mana than extra damage on the boss.

Baseline

The rest is familiar: Game iconTaunt and Game iconDemoralizing Shout for managing aggro and incoming damage, Game iconCharge for engaging, Game iconBloodrage for starting rage, Game iconHeroic Strike and Game iconCleave to dump excess, Game iconMocking Blow as an extra pulling tool.

Talent Overview

The Protection tree holds 55 points against a budget of 51, so four points have to be trimmed. In the build below, Game iconImproved Disarm is dropped entirely and Game iconImproved Sunder Armor is cut by one point — the most painless sacrifice for dungeon and raid tanking. For PvP the logic is different: there, disarm is worth bringing back.

Not a ready-made leveling build. This is only an example allocation for reference.

Weapon Selection

The main takeaway is simple: the shield is no longer just a defensive item. Unyielding and Bastion directly require it for their threat and damage bonuses, Game iconShield Specialization and Defensive Mastery tie the rage return to it, and block value directly increases the damage of Game iconShield Slam.

So a shield should be evaluated on three parameters at once: armor and block chance for survivability, block value for Game iconShield Slam damage, and the item's own stats. A shield upgrade in Forever gives more than it did in Classic.

For the off hand—rather, the main hand—a tank wants a one-handed weapon with a fast speed: Game iconRevenge, Game iconShield Slam, and Game iconSunder Armor do not depend on speed, but frequent auto-attacks fill rage more evenly and better support Game iconHeroic Strike.

Switching to dual-wielding for threat, familiar from Classic, is noticeably more expensive in Forever: you lose not only armor and block, but also the Unyielding and Bastion bonuses, and both sources of rage from the shield.
